Places to Visit on a Trip to Machu Picchu
The two places that really should be combined with a trip to Machu Picchu are Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire. The city has the nearest airport to Machu Picchu and is a must-see destination in itself. The buildings of the historic center are a combination of Spanish colonial architecture and Incan construction.
The Sacred Valley is about half-way between Cusco and Machu Picchu. It is a beautiful area that really makes any trip to Machu Picchu a memorable one. Observe the local people farming the land, visit traditional markets and fascinating ruins. The Sacred Valley is a great area for hiking, biking, and just generally exploring. All Machu Picchu vacations should include a visit to the Sacred Valley. You won’t regret it!
How to Visit Machu Picchu
People often ask us, how can I get the most out of my trip to Machu Picchu? There are a couple of ways to visit Machu Picchu depending on your travel style. For travelers preferring comfort or on a tight schedule, the numerous train options are the best way to get to Machu Picchu, from the simple but comfortable Expedition train to the luxury Hiram Bingham train. Enjoy views of the Sacred Valley along the way as you get ready for the wonder ahead.
For adventurers, trekking the renowned Inca Trail is a rewarding journey. On our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Peru Tour, travelers will embark on the classic Inca Trail trek. This route leads explorers along trails surrounded by hidden gems that would be unseen if traveling by train. Quite exceptional is the entrance to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, through the Sun Gate, the very door that the Incas used thousands of years ago.

Thinking about a Machu Picchu trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Machu Picchu Vacation Planning page for in-depth Machu Picchu travel tips.
When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
Wondering when the best time to visit Machu Picchu is? It is accessible year-round. The Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance, but the ruins themselves are still open and can be reached by train. Machu Picchu has two distinct seasons: the wet season from November to March and the dry season from April to November. During the dry season, the skies are clear and temperatures are cooler, particularly at night. This is also considered the busy season, with an influx of visitors from June to August. The wet season is during the summer in Peru. In addition to increased rain, travelers can expect higher temperatures and fewer tourists crowds at the famed site and Cusco.
