Chile Travel FAQ’s

Thinking about a Chile trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Chile Vacation Planning page for in-depth Chile travel tips.

When is the best time to visit Chile?

The best time to visit Chile is during the shoulder seasons of October – November or March – April, when travelers can explore the country in comfortable weather that is neither too hot or too cold.

However, for those who prefer the outdoors and hot temperatures, the summer season from December – March might be the best time to visit the beach towns of La Serena or hike the surrounding areas of Santiago de Chile. While those who enjoy winter sports and fewer crowds, the winter season from June – August is a wonderful time to visit one of Chile’s most notable ski resorts. Ultimately Chile has a wide range of landscapes that are accessible year-round, like the breathtaking Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, or the quaint island of Chiloe, with its picturesque stilt houses. There’s something for everyone in Chile.

Is Chile expensive to travel?

Yes, Chile is expensive to travel to and around in comparison to other South American countries. Living standards are European and so are the prices. In Santiago and in the hotels expect to pay prices as in the US. However, taxes are included in restaurant prices & bills and tipping is only 10%!

When should I visit the Atacama?

You can visit the Atacama desert anytime. It is the driest desert on the planet, it never rains, and the sun always shines. Just beware of cold nights due to the high altitude! Especially in June, July, August.

What are the best activities for tourists in Chile?

There is a myriad of activities to choose from while traveling in Chile: from wine tours to hiking tours to city tours, there’s an activity for everyone, though most are biased towards the incredible nature of Chile. Anything nature-inspired is the best activity for tourists in Chile.

What is Chile most famous for?

Chile is famous for many things: the intrigue depends on what special interests you have. Chile is most famous for its wine and overwhelming landscapes of the Andes, both in Patagonia and along the entire length of the country. Equally intriguing is the Polynesian mystery of Easter Island. For others, the fact that Chile has the World’s best fly-fishing rivers may be the most inspiring. In any case, Chile is very well known for its many outdoor activities offered in a sophisticated environment. Tour Chile and find out all of the fun facts about Chile and why it is so famous.

What is the most popular Chile tour?

The most popular Chile tour would have to be one that encompasses all of Chile’s highlights. On a tour like this, travelers can experience a bit of everything that makes Chile so unique. Take a guided city tour of Santiago, sip wine in the Casablanca Valley, experience a new world on Easter Island, explore the greatest depths of nature at Torres del Paine, witnessing the beauty of the marble caves and stargaze in the Atacama Desert. An expansive tour like this one is best arranged with an expert Chile travel agent.

How safe is Chile?

Yes! Chile is one of the safest countries in South America, well within European and US standards. Income inequality is low, and drugs are not a big issue – two things that help prevent crime in the first place! With a few common-sense precautions, you do not need to worry much about staying safe in Chile.

Is English spoken in Chile?

The official language of Chile is Spanish, though all schools teach English. It is very rare that you will encounter a language barrier while on a Chile tour.

How large is Chile?

Chile is large enough to have all climate zones on Earth, except for tropical climates. But that is not because Chile is big, rather the country is “skinny” and stretches along the western side of the southern Andes all the way to the southernmost point of South America. Chile is not large; it is rather long and slender.

Do I need vaccinations for Chile?

Chile doesn’t require vaccinations for entry for most travelers. You may only need those that are recommended at your home. We encourage all travelers to check with their local travel clinic or doctor for advice on travel medicine and vaccinations. This may change following Covid-19, ask us for the latest.

Do you need a visa to go to Chile?

Tourist visas for most countries are not required to go to Chile. However, your passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months after your travel date. Check our Chile visa requirements page for more information.

What is the cruise port for cruises to Chile?

There are two important cruise ports: One is Valparaiso, for those large cruise ships (often from the Caribbean). Then, there is Punta Arenas for the cruises coming through the fjords to Cape Horn and Ushuaia, Argentina. Lastly, there is a port for cruises is in Puerto Montt, in the Lake District.

How wealthy is Chile?

Chile is actually quite wealthy. Chile’s sound economic policies (dating back to the 1980s) are paying off! Besides being a major wine exporter, the country is also the most important exporter of copper.
