While exploring Sao Luis, be sure to plan some time to simply relax on the beach, especially Ponta d’Areia, São Marcos, and Calhau. Tour Sao Luis the same way that the locals get around on a jardineira, which is a lorry or buggy with benches. In June, there are folklore festivals with costumed dancers and musicians parading through the city. You also should plan a day to visit the nearby city of Alcantara, which was founded in the 16th century and is now a National Historical site. Further away but just as worthwhile are Jericoaracara, Lencois Maranhenses, and Fortaleza.
