South America is well connected to the rest of the world. From North America and Europe the choice of routes is huge with direct flights to most countries. From New Zealand and Australia there are flights to Chile and Argentina (Latam, Qantas and Air New Zealand). From Africa, there are flights to Brazil and Argentina (Latam, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and TAAG). From the Middle East, there are flights to Brazil, Argentina and Chile (Emirates and Qatar). Asia does not have any flights to South America at present, so you’ll need to travel via another continent – the best route depends on the countries you’d like to visit in South America.
As a general rule, flight prices to South America are highest over Christmas, New Year and Easter – plus July and August. It pays to plan well ahead, especially at these times.
Within South America, the two most important airlines are Latam (One World) and Avianca (Star Alliance). Others include Brazilian airline Gol, Argentine airline Aerolineas Argentinas and a number of low cost airlines and smaller airlines.
