Quebrada de Humahuaca

Located in the northern Argentine province of Jujuy, Quebrada de Humahuaca is part of the Camino Inca and boasts spectacular views of the surrounding multicolored (literally dozens of colors) mountains with a backdrop of piercing blue skies. The Rio Grande flows through the valley and past the town of Humahuaca, making it a fertile area in an otherwise dry desert.

Though, keep in mind this valley is more than its appearance. It has been deemed a key archeological site due to the numerous artifacts that have been discovered here dating back 10,000 years.

Close by the Quebrada de Humahuaca is the town of Purmamarca and the Cerro de los Siete Colores, or Hill of Seven Colors. Also worth checking out is the Pucará de Tilcara, a pre-Inca fortress located on a hill overlooking the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The site was excavated in the early 1900s, and declared a national monument and partially rebuilt in 2000. There is an adjacent museum and small cactus garden. It’s well worth the trip to Argentina’s northwest in order to explore these gorgeous landscapes and relax in the tranquil farming towns.
