Travel Consultant, Tom Maker, spent a month living in Rio de Janeiro and some of his favorite weekend getaways were to Paraty, Ilha Grande & Buzios. In part 3 of this 4 part blog series, Tom takes us to Buzios, a tropical beach town just 3-hours north of Rio de Janeiro.
Part 1: Paraty – A Weekend in Paraty
Part 2: Ilha Grande – A Little Taste of Paradise
Buzios is a stunningly beautiful peninsula frequently visited by the region’s (and the world’s) wealthy and famous. This tropical beach town sits on a uniquely shaped peninsula which gives the area an “island feel.” The small oasis was once a simple fishing village until Brigitte Bardot and her Brazilian boyfriend discovered the enticing land. Now, Buzios is one of the most upscale seaside resort spots and is popular among many socialites and celebrities.
Why Buzios?
Be aware that Buzios is not a single town but rather three settlements on the same peninsula – Ossos, Manguinhos and Armação de Búzios.
- Ossos (Bones), at the northern tip of the peninsula, is the oldest and most attractive town. It has a beautiful harbor and yacht club, plus a few hotels and bars.
- Manguinhos, on the isthmus, is the most commercial of the three settlements.
- Armação, in between, is the heart of town, with the most tourist amenities; it’s here that you’ll find Rua das Pedras, the hub of Búzios’ nightlife and Orla Bardot, the town’s picturesque beachfront promenade.
With over 17 different beaches to choose from, it comes as no surprise why Buzios is so popular. Each beach is distinct in shape, feel and even water temperature. Along the peninsula are stunning boutique style hotels with priceless views and world-class restaurants. Walk along the Mediterranean-style cobblestone streets, that spill out into the sunlight during the day, and turn to lively bars at night. From morning till sunset, there is much to experience in Buzios.
The Best Beaches in Buzios
While Buzio’s surroundings are hip and trendy, the beaches are where the true paradise awaits. Locals and tourists alike line the beaches of Buzios, each in awe of the bright white sand and sparkling water. I loved ‘Brava Beach’ for its seclusion and sunshine as well as ‘Azeda Beach’ for its natural surroundings. Surfing and windsurfing are common activities along with the windier parts of the peninsula, as well as snorkeling and schooner cruises.
