The Best Day Trips from Buenos Aires

After enjoying a traditional Buenos Aires city tour, watching a tango show, and visiting a few museums, consider an exciting day trip from the bustling city. Not far from Buenos Aires is Tigre Delta, one of the largest deltas in the world, where travelers can enjoy local markets, restaurants, and its carefree remote islands. For a rugged Argentina adventure, take a day trip to the countryside and visit one of Argentina’s traditional estancias.

For wine lovers, head to Fina Don Atilio and sample some of the best red wines in the world. Finally, for a unique escape to another country, take the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento for a leisurely stroll in a quaint, colonial town. Take advantage of these 5 incredible day trips from Buenos Aires and make the most of your custom tour! All 5 of these destinations are great additions to your vacation package in Argentina!

1. Tigre Delta

Isla El Descanso in the Tigre Delta is a beautiful private island that combines landscape, outdoor art, poetry, and nature.  From your hotel in Buenos Aires, take a short transfer to the Tigre Delta in the Buenos Aires Province.  Enjoy a 20-minute boat ride through colorful islands and marshlands until arriving at Isla El Descanso.  Upon arrival, enjoy savory cold cuts and mini empanadas while admiring the flora and fauna and the unique outdoor art collection.

Then, indulge in a traditional Argentine lunch on the island with Provoleta (a local variety of provolone cheese that is grilled), chicken, salad & cake.  After wandering around the small island take a short boat ride back through the Tigre Delta and end your evening in Buenos Aires. Read more about the Tigre Delta under our Buenos Aires City Tour.

2. Estancia Puesto Viejo

The Estancia Puesto Viejo day trip from Buenos Aires is a relaxing experience in the Argentine Countryside. While many estancias offer large tourist group outings, the Estancia Puesto Viejo offers a more individual, personalized, and genuine experience.  Not only will you learn about the game of Polo, but you will also enjoy lessons from a professional instructor.

Later, if you want, you can watch an adrenaline-fueled Polo match.  Along with the complimentary activities, this excursion includes a lovely welcome drink, 3-course Asado lunch, afternoon tea, and soft drinks throughout the day.  We offer this “Day in the Countryside” tour package as a day trip from our tours in the city of Buenos Aires, available throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

3. Colonia del Sacramento

A Uruguay day trip from Buenos Aires is what everyone needs on an Argentina tour. Take a 1-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires across the Rio Plata to the charming colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. Colonia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with lovely 17th Century colonial buildings and plazas.

What to do in Colonia Uruguay

While here, you will be guided through the quaint cobblestone streets.  Take in the most important sights before settling down for lunch at a local restaurant. Then, spend the afternoon wandering through this picturesque town and enjoy a glass of Tannat, Uruguay’s most popular wine.  If you have time, consider renting a golf cart to see more of the town.  In the afternoon, return to the port and board the return ferry to Buenos Aires.  Read more about making Colonia a day trip from Buenos Aires.

4. Montevideo

Montevideo city center

Although a bit further away than Colonia del Sacramento, Montevideo is a perfect day trip from Buenos Aires as well. It’s the capital of Uruguay, so it is a much bigger city. However, it’s a good visit if you want to compare both the important capitals of South America during one trip. Believe it or not but Montevideo represents two different dances. Learn the tango and candombe, a unique local dance with African origins.

There are plenty of things to do in Montevideo! Montevideo is famous for its cultural scene with lots of theatres (e.g famous Solis Theatre), musical scene, modern and old architecture, art and craft markets. The city’s main square is called Plaza Independencia. On its corner, you will find iconic art deco style Palacio Salvo, the tallest building in Uruguay, and the image you can see on each postcard from Montevideo. Montevideo is also known for the longest coastline sidewalk – Rambla of Montevideo. This promenade by Rio de la Plata is over 13 miles long!

How to Get to Montevideo from Buenos Aires

Although it would be the quickest to get to Montevideo by plane (the flight time is 50 minutes) it’s not the best option. When choosing a plane, you would need to get to Buenos Aires airport and be there 2 hours before a flight. After landing at Montevideo Carrasco airport you would have to calculate around 40 min to get downtown. That is quite a lot of time for a day trip from Buenos Aires.

The best solution is to take a fast direct ferry from Buenos Aires to Montevideo. The trip takes less than 3 hours and usually, there are morning departures from Buenos Aires and late evening departures from Montevideo. It is just perfect if you want to spend some productive hours doing a tour in Uruguay.

5. Finca Don Atilio

For all wine enthusiasts, a trip to the Finca Don Atilio vineyard is a must. The vineyard is in Uribelarrea and is similar to many wineries in Uruguay. Guests on a wine tour can sample plenty of delicious red wine, such as Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir varietals, and Tannat. Tannat wine grapes are known to have best adapted to the climate of the region.

While touring, travelers will not only taste the wine but learn about the history of the vineyard from the owner, Don Horacio, himself. It’s a special experience for anyone looking for a fun day trip from Buenos Aires.

6. Estancia El Ombú de Areco

Yerba Mate leaves

Another great day trip is a visit to the Estancia El Ombu de Areco! From your hotel, drive to the countryside and visit this traditional estancia. Here, you can taste the traditional asado (barbecue) and try the typical Argentinean drink, mate.

There is a wide range of things to do at this authentic Gaucho estancia including guided horseback riding or carriage rides. After tasting the typical pastelitos (traditional Argentine sweet pies) return to your hotel in Buenos Aires.
