Although we are experienced travelers, we still felt that there was an unexpected amount of traffic and many large groups of tourists. We were not alone in wanting to see the splendors of South America. Some locations and modes of travel had to be missed due to local conditions, public protests, and differences between general tour descriptions and local tour operator implementation of the tour packages. Hotels were all very clean, quality varied some too elegant, some too. All guides seemed to want additional tips. English was definitely a second language, usually available, but not always. Machu Picchu and Cuzco were definitely highlights. Santiago is just a very large, busy city. Buenos Aires is large, but easy to navigate and cabs are inexpensive and available.
