How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Cusco, Peru https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/avoid-altitude-sickness-cusco-peru https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/avoid-altitude-sickness-cusco-peru#respond Mon, 31 Aug 2020 07:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/avoid-altitude-sickness-cusco-peru/ Last updated on January 19th, 2021 at 08:27 am

How to Avoid Altitude Sickness

How to avoid Altitude Sickness is very often a concern for travelers visiting Cusco. Especially if you’re thinking about embarking on an adventure tour where you’ll be hiking, climbing, or simply reaching high altitudes. It’s normal to be a bit apprehensive, but once you’ve learned our expert tips on how to avoid altitude sickness, we hope you’ll feel a bit better about planning a trip to Peru.

What is altitude sickness?

What to know about altitude sickness when traveling in Peru

Before you can learn how to avoid altitude sickness in Peru, you must know about the illness. Altitude Sickness, known as soroche in Peru, can occur for many people at heights starting at 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) above sea level. Altitude sickness is caused by insufficient oxygen in the blood and can cause dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. Many people have said altitude sickness feels like having a hangover. Everyone is susceptible to altitude sickness; it doesn’t matter your age, gender, weight, or even fitness level. You must know your limitations and always consult your physician to get their medical advice before you go. They are knowledgable about your medical history and can give you the best information related to you and your needs.

What are the high altitude destinations in Peru?

See our list of elevations including Machu Picchu elevation, Cusco altitude, and more.

  • Rainbow Mountain* 17,060 feet (5,200 meters)
  • Cerro de Pasco 14,200 feet (4,330 meters)
  • Puno/Lake Titicaca 12,500 feet (3,811 meters)
  • Cusco 11,152 feet (3,399 meters)
  • Huancayo 10,692 feet (3,259 meters)
  • Huaraz 10,013 feet (3,052 meters)
  • Ollantaytambo 9,160 feet (2,792 meters)
  • Ayacucho 9,058 feet (2,761 meters)
  • Machu Picchu 7,972 feet (2,430 meters)

happy hikers at rainbow mountain summit

*The Rainbow Mountain is a sight to behold, but one must understand hiking to the summit isn’t an undertaking that should be taken lightly. The tour from Cusco and back can choose from 14 to 16 hours depending on weather, and as you can see from the chart above, its 5908 feet (1801 meters) higher in altitude to Cusco, so we recommend at least two nights in the city before undertaking the hike.

How can I prepare for altitude sickness in Peru?

How to combat altitude sickness in Peru

One way to prepare for altitude sickness is to spend some time resting in the Sacred Valley. The town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley is at a much more manageable height of 9,160 ft (2,792 meters) above sea level (compared to Machu Picchu and Cusco). This is where we always recommend our clients begin their journey, particularly if they plan to hike the Inca Trail. Spending a night resting in the Sacred Valley helps travelers prepare their bodies for climbing the high altitude of Cusco, significantly reducing their altitude sickness.

landscape photo of the sacred valley peru

Besides preparing your body for the altitude, The Sacred Valley is a beautiful place to spend a few days exploring. You can visit the famous Pisac Market or relax and unwind in the many delightful hotels. My particular favorite is the Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness Spa.

How to prevent altitude sickness in Peru:

To enjoy your trip to its fullest, follow these simple tips to avoid altitude sickness.

1. Stay hydrated

People often wonder, what can I drink to help with altitude sickness in Peru? We have an answer for you – water! It is very important to stay hydrated. The human body will lose water when it reaches high elevation, that is why it is vital to keep hydrated. The higher the elevation, the more water you should drink. For example, you should be drinking more water if you’re visiting Cusco compared to if you’re exploring Lima.

2. Avoid alcoholic beverages

To reduce altitude sickness symptoms, please refrain from drinking alcohol. Alcohol will worsen your symptoms of altitude sickness. You should not drink alcohol in high altitude places for the first several days of your arrival.

3. Don’t overdo it with activities

While you might feel the urge to get outside and quickly start exploring, we urge you to take it easy for the first couple of days. Participate in mild activities in your first few days in Cusco, Peru. Stroll around the city and parks, and take it easy. Don’t try and do everything at once when you first arrive in Peru. Instead, listen to your body.

4. Eat a diet full of carbohydrates

Carbs are a great source of energy when you’re at high altitudes. Pasta and bread are great things to eat and there are plenty of Peruvian dishes that are perfect to eat. However, make sure you don’t overeat either!

5. Add coca to your daily regimen

One of the best natural and local supplements for altitude sickness is coca. Coca tea, coca candy, cocoa brownies, and the raw coca leaves themselves are great natural treatments for altitude sickness. Coca can be found everywhere in Cusco, and it can help alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness.

6. Consult your physician

Before you go on your trip to Peru, make sure to consult your physician about your plans to visit places of high altitude and how to stay healthy. Your physician may advise and prescribe you an “altitude sickness tablet” and will most likely advise you to take these at least one day before your arrival.

If you find yourself affected by soroche, you can take Diamox/Acetazolamide. This medication is available at pharmacies in Cusco. There are also health clinics in Cusco, some of which have English speaking personnel. Bring your travel insurance card when you go.

7. Inquire about oxygen supplementation

Many 4-star and 5-star hotels in Cusco offer oxygen supplementation or oxygen-supplemented rooms and some medical services. Talk with your hotel to see if oxygen is available.

Some hotels that offer oxygen enrichment include:

  • El Monasterio
  • Casa Cartagena
  • Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel
  • Palacio del Inka Cusco
  • Inkaterra La Casona
  • Casa Andina Premium Cusco
  • Novotel Cusco
  • Ramada by Wyndham Costa Del Sol Cusco

8. Buy travel insurance

Travel insurance may help protect you from unforeseen incidents that can happen while traveling. Get a free quote on travel insurance before your trip to Peru and see if one of the packages covers altitude sickness.

9. Contact an expert

Our Travel Consultants at SouthAmerica.travel are experts in this destination and have been sending clients to Cusco, Peru, for 19 years. Several of our consultants have been to Cusco and Machu Picchu themselves and can give you excellent advice on being prepared and help you avoid altitude sickness. Be sure also to read our client testimonials, as this will provide you with some more insight into the destination and our client’s experiences.

best-hikes-in-patagonia-mount-fitz-roy-cerro-torres

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
Time Required: 2 Days
Where to Stay: El Chalten

No list titled the best hikes in Patagonia would be complete without the Mount Fitz Roy Trek and Cerro Torres hike. This is arguably the most classic trek in all of Patagonia because it gets you up close and personal with the most famous peak in all of Patagonia. Located in the Southern part of Torres Del Paine National Park, these two treks can be combined together easily over 2 days in what might be the best hike in all of Patagonia. They can also be split up into two separate hikes and completed as day trips easily from El Chalten.

3. Perito Moreno Glacier

Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
Time Required: 1 Day
Where to Stay: El Calafate

An absolute classic, we LOVE sending our travelers up onto the Perito Moreno Glacier. This is one of the Best Hikes in Patagonia because it’s easy to access from El Calafate, as well as the absolutely stunning view at the top of the glacier. This roughly 4-hour hike with crampons is a must-do hike in Patagonia. What more needs to be said? Do it! Perito Moreno Glacier is truly a must-see place in Patagonia.

4. Piedra del Fraile & Glaciar Pollone

best-hikes-in-patagonia-piedra-del-fraile

Difficulty Level: Moderate
Time Required: 1 Day
Where to Stay: El Chalten

This is an absolutely wonderful and off-the-beaten-path trek. Piedra del Fraile is a 2-hour walk from the trailhead and the Pollone Glacier will take about another 2 hours from there. Another wonderful day hike in Patagonia, this hike is a bit difficult, so you will hardly see anyone else on the trail. A spectacular day-hike choice.

5. The Laguna Torres Trek

best-hikes-in-patagonia-laguna-torres-trek

Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Required: 1 Day
Where to Stay: Torres del Paine

The Laguna Torres Trek is a Patagonia classic hike and a must-see place in Patagonia. It features some of the best views in all of Patagonia and is easily completed in a full-day by someone with moderate to intermediate fitness levels. It will take you about 4 hours to reach the lake way amongst the rugged peaks of Patagonia. Including time spent at the top and then hike back, the total trek takes about 9 hours. If you are looking for a day-hike in Patagonia, consider Laguna Torres.

6. The O Circuit

best-hikes-in-patagonia-O-Circuit

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Hard
Time Required: 6 to 10 Days
Where to Stay: Torres del Paine

Next up on our list of the best hikes in Patagonia is the O Circuit. Also known as the Circuit Patagonia, this hike is an 8-day journey through Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Considered by many to be the more remote, more rugged version of the W Trek, this trek is somewhat limited in epic views but more than makes up for it in authenticity and remoteness. This trek will involve tons of camping and rugged backpacking and if you are an adventure traveler at heart, this is just the trek for you.

7. Paso del Viento Trek

hiking trail in patagonia featuring a glacier

Difficulty Level: Hard
Time Required: 3 Days
Where to Stay: El Chalten

Paso del Vientos, also known as Windy Pass, is a remote pass in Patagonia. The trek or hike to the pass takes 3 days and 2 nights to complete and will involve remote camping, route-finding, and surely some of the most amazing and remote views you have ever seen in your life. Begin and end this trek in El Chalten and consider it if you are looking for a trek a bit more off the beaten path.

8. Laguna Capri Trek

best-hikes-in-patagonia-Laguna-Capri-Trek

Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Required: Half Day
Where to Stay: El Chalten

One of the best day-hikes in Patagonia, the Laguna Capri Trek, located in Los Glaciares National Park, is an easy 2-hour journey up to a picturesque lake overlooking Mount Fitz Roy. This hike provides one of the best views in all of Patagonia, in our opinion, and is doable by nearly every fitness level. So no matter your travel style, if you are in Patagonia and looking for a hike with a lot of rewards and minimal effort, this is the hike you are looking for.

9. The Huemul Circuit

best-hikes-in-patagonia-huemul-circuit

Difficulty Level: Hard
Time Required: 4 to 5 Days
Where to Stay: El Chalten

Regarded as one of the most difficult treks in all of Patagonia, the Huemul Circuit is a very tough four-day journey through a remote area of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Starting again in El Chalten, you spend 4 strenuous days rappelling on ropes, walking through storybook meadows, and catching views that only Patagonia can deliver. This hike is no joke and we recommend a Patagonia trekking guide to accompany you on your journey. It is the best way to enjoy yourself and stay safe on the most difficult hike on our list.

10. Laguna de Los Tres Hike

best-hikes-in-patagonia-Laguna-de-Los-Tres

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Hard
Time Required: 1 Day (option for overnight stay)
Where to Stay: El Chalten

Laguna de Los Tres is a must-see place in Patagonia. Laguna de Los Tres is an absolutely breathtaking hike to a deep blue lake hike up in the mountains. This hike is one of The Best Hikes in Patagonia because along with it, you hike past Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre Peak, as well as Aguja Poincenot. The hike is located in Los Glaciares National Park and it can be completed in either one long day of walking or split into 2 days. Our recommendation is to take 2 days to complete it and witness one of the most amazing sunrises you will surely ever see! This hike starts from El Chalten and it just so happens we wrote a Travel Guide to El Chalten! Have a look.

Once you’ve finished your Patagonia trek, consider a stay on a traditional estancia as a great way to end your trip.

15 Things to Do in São Paulo https://www.southamerica.travel/brazil/news/what-to-do-in-sao-paulo https://www.southamerica.travel/brazil/news/what-to-do-in-sao-paulo#respond Thu, 30 Jul 2020 07:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/what-to-do-in-sao-paulo/ Last updated on March 22nd, 2021 at 11:24 am

Things to Do in São Paulo

For those who are interested in a trip to Brazil, make sure to include São Paulo in your itinerary, as there are plenty of things to do. A Visit to São Paulo the economic center in Brazil and the capital of culture in Latin America, shows you that Brazil is so much more than just beaches. This vibrant city has a lot to offer with its great architecture, history, culture, world-class restaurants, museums, theaters, and famous boutiques. Here are my expert-rated ideas for what to do in São Paulo.

#1. Visit Praça da Sé (Sé Square)

Se Cathedral in Se Square in Sao Paulo

First on our list for things to do in São Paulo is visit the Sé Square. The Sé Square is the ground zero of the city and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sé is an attraction that goes beyond religion as it represents a large part of São Paulo’s history. In addition to the cathedral featuring unique architecture, the cathedral is the largest church in São Paulo and one of the five largest neo-Gothic temples in the world. It has a capacity of about 8 thousand people, and it is from there that the distance from any point in the city is calculated. Here, people of all styles get together, and the square is a reference for the old city center.

#2. Go Shopping on the Avenida Paulista

To see more about the amazing architecture of the city you can walk on one of the most important avenues in São Paulo. Paulista Avenue is located between the “old” and “new” parts of the city. There are many museums, theaters, cinemas, exhibition halls, large bookstores as well as craft fairs and street artists. Avenida Paulista is where the business center and cultural landmarks meet and represent all the plurality of São Paulo. This avenue has an extensive shopping area and it’s home to the São Paulo Museum of Art, the Rose’s House, and Trianon Park, reminiscent of the Atlantic Forest native to the city.

The complex also has the S. José do Anchieta church, the P. Antônio Vieira library and the “Café do Pateo”, one of the best places in downtown to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee.

#5. Explore the Exhibitions at Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca has the main exhibitions that arrive in the city, not to mention the permanent exhibits that occupy the upper floors of the place. The Pinacoteca is located in a privileged place: next to Estação da luz and Parque da Luz, in an incredible green area of the capital. To extend your tour here, have lunch or stop by at the charming Cafeteria Flor Café, which has an incredible outdoor area overlooking the park.

#6. See Oscar Niemeyer’s Work at Museu de Arte Contemporânea

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in a building designed by Oscar Niemeyer, offering a wonderful view of Ibirapuera Park. The collection consists of famous works in painting, sculpture, photography, and conceptual arts. To add to your experience, consider visiting the Obelisco Bar on the rooftop. This is a perfect place to see the city from another angle. Enjoy traditional drinks inspired by Brazilian culture accompanied by well-served portions.

#7. Enjoy Cocktails at a Hidden Bar

The Municipal Theater in São Paulo is one of the most important theaters in Brazil and another postcard of the city of São Paulo. The building was inspired by the Paris Opera House. Historically, the theater was the stage of the Week of Modern Art, the landmark of an important event in São Paulo. The underground of the Theater hides a gem, “Bar dos Arcos“, one of the trendiest bars in São Paulo.

#8. Art at the MASP on a Visit to São Paulo

Exterior of Sao Paulo Museum of Art

São Paulo is considered the art center of the country and offers a large choice of museums and cultural centers. Among them, the São Paulo Museum of Art, popularly known as MASP is an absolute must for art lovers, as it has a collection of European art considered as the finest in Latin America and all Southern Hemisphere. It also has a great variety of Brazilian art, prints, and drawings as well as some collections of African and Asian art, antiquities, and decorative arts. This is the only building in the world that has its main structure supported by four pillars and with a span of approximately 75 meters under it.

#9. See the Street Art in the Vila Madalena Neighborhood

In addition to bohemian life, the Vila Madalena neighborhood is also a very important cultural stronghold for São Paulo. Here is where “Beco do Batman” is, a lane with walls completely covered with colored graffiti that are changed from time to time. It is a perfect place for photography It is an open-air art gallery.

#10. A Visit to São Paulo must See: The Instituto Butantan

The Butantan Institute is the world-famous research lab specializing in anti-venom research and is one of the major touristic attractions in the district of Butanta in Sao Paulo. You can also see a variety of snakes kept in environments similar to their natural habitats.

#11. Practice Yoga at Ibirapuera Park

ibirapuera-park-sao-paulo

Ibirapuera, the most famous park in the city of São Paulo, opened in the 1950s and receives many visitors every day. This place is ideal for those who want to go for a walk outdoors, ride a bicycle, practice yoga, or have a picnic with friends. Inside the Park, you will find a Japanese Pavilion, the Museum of Contemporary Art, a planetary, and a sculpture garden. These are just some of the numerous attractions here.

#12. Taste Local Food at Municipal Market

If you are a food lover, you are going to love your stay in São Paulo as there are a lot of really good restaurants serving delicious Brazilian food. And if there is one thing you shouldn’t miss, it’s a visit to the municipal market. Here, you can find anything from imported delicacies such as Italian salamis to tropical delights such as fresh fruits you have never seen before. There are also some very nice restaurants within the market, where you can eat and enjoy this food paradise.

Expert tip: While here, try the bologna sandwich. Among the most popular and well-known is the bologna sandwich, considered the most famous in the world. There are more than 300 grams of mortadella, in addition to seasonings and spices that make the snack even more delicious.

#13. Enjoy Incredible Nightlife

The largest city in Brazil has a lot to offer in terms of nightlife! Whether it’s live shows, famous restaurants, “pizzarias” or simply hanging out, there is something for everyone in this cosmopolitan city. When thinking about bars and clubs, two places are a must: Vila Madalena and Rua Augusta.

Rua Augusta is most famous for its nightlife. However, Vila Madalena combines the best of nightlife and hot afternoons with a beer around Rua Aspicuelta. There you will find a multitude of bars that open around lunchtime. Therefore, it is a great opportunity to eat a Saturday feijoada! Stay until late at night and listen to all musical tastes.

#14. Indulge in Italian Cuisine

São Paulo is famous for the best pizza places in Brazil. The Jardins neighborhood, more precisely at Haddock Lobo street, has some of the best Italian restaurants, and steakhouses. Travelers love Rodeio and Figueira Rubayat (with a charming fig tree in the courtyard). La Macca and Gero are great choices of Italian restaurants.

#15. Enjoy Marvelous Views from the Altino Arantes Building

Altino building in sao paulo brazil

Last on our list of things to do in São Paulo is enjoy the city views! For the best view of the city’s landscape, go to the top of the Altino Arantes Building. The Santander Lighthouse is one of the most emblematic buildings in downtown. Its architectural design was inspired by the Empire State Building in New York. For 8 years it was the tallest building in the city. There you will be able to take great pictures of the city and its surroundings. There’s no doubt you’ll see for yourself how gigantic São Paulo really is. In addition to the viewpoint, the building has a chandelier with 10,000 crystals, granite floors, and marble walls. There is also a small museum that receives interesting exhibitions.

Kuelap Fortress – An Archaeological Wonder of Peru https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/kuelap-fortress-an-archaeological-wonder-of-peru https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/kuelap-fortress-an-archaeological-wonder-of-peru#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2019 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/?p=15719 Last updated on March 23rd, 2021 at 11:58 am

The fortress of Kuelap is an archeological wonder, that for a long time was not accessible. And Kuelap is – archeologically and historically – much more important than other Incan sites. In fact, Kuelap explains why and how the Incan Empire was ended by Spain!

The Incans are well recognized for their archaeological sites in Peru, especially the extraordinary Machu Picchu. While Machu Picchu stole the hearts of many, Peru has a multitude of other sites to offer its guests. For example, visit Ollantaytambo, what once stood as the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, or hike around Choquequirao, and it’s interesting staircase configuration.

Consider also exploring Pisac, a place of military citadel, religious temples, and individual dwellings that overlook the Sacred Valley.

But if you’re in the mood to be utterly fascinated by history, check out the Kuelap fortress where the end of the Inca Empire started. Our new Gocta Waterfalls & Kuelap Tour includes both: The Kuelap fortress and the natural wonder of the Gocta Falls.

Some consider Kuelap as one of the largest ancient stone monuments in the New World. Built by the Chachapoyas in the 6th century AD, Kuelap was kept in use until the 16th century. Once a difficult destination to reach, visitors headed to Peru can now visit Kuelap comfortably due to the newly implemented cable car. So there’s no reason not to add this destination or inspired Peru Tour to your bucket list!

Begin in Chachapoyas

Displaying infrastructure carved within the mountainside walls in Revash, Chachapoyas

Begin your journey in Chachapoyas (also known as Chachas). Here you will want to spend at least two nights due to its colonial beauty. Founded during the Spanish conquest, lush cloud forests surround this laid-back painted white town. In the past, it served as an important area for trade. Now it serves as a busy marketplace, fantastic for exploring the local shops and the ancient ruins left behind.

From Chachapoyas, board a bus to Tingo and embark on a scenic cable car ride to the entrance of Kuelap (3,000 meters high). Don’t worry about crowded lines for this tour. Because unlike Machu Picchu, the cable car to Kuelap consists mostly of local Peruvians that are checking out the new mode of transportation or the gorgeous orchids blossoming nearby. The trip from Chachapoyas to Kuelap takes about 2 hours long. Though the ancient structures that await you are worth every moment spent traveling.

Join the Kuelap Fortress Guided Tour

Kuelap Fortress Chachapoyas Round House

Once you have reached the entrance to Kuelap, opt for an expert guide to show you around the 20-meter high walls and 3 levels of stone structures. If you plan on hitting every set of ruins, the excursion will take 3-hours. Giving you plenty of time to marvel at the typical roundhouses of Chachapoyas. These houses remain true to their original structure, overcoming any earthquake that tested their stability.

It won’t surprise you to know that Kuelap applied for UNESCO World Heritage status. However, because of the rebuilding of one of the circle houses, the prestigious title was not granted. Although Kuelap experienced a small hiccup in gaining UNESCO status, we predict that the historical site will represent UNESCO status in the future. It’s only a matter of time before gaining recognition for its historical significance and beauty.

Kuelap Fortress & the Gocta Falls

A view of the top of the Goca Waterfall

While you’re in the area, check out Gocta Waterfall. Inside one of the quaint lodges nearby, you can easily view this waterfall from your bedroom window or you can journey outside to see the striking waterfall up close. While discovered in 2000, Gocta Waterfall was measured in 2006. After the measurement, the waterfall gained its title as the third largest free-leaping waterfall in the world (right behind Angel Falls in Venezuela), falling at the height of 771 meters. Luckily for guests staying nearby, due to the extraordinary height, you can’t hear the water trickling down. Instead, the surrounding air becomes painted in rainbow-colored mist. Not only is the Gocta Waterfall an incredible sight, but you can also see the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest that makes up the mountains in the distance.

The journey by foot to the Gocta Waterfall takes about 2 hours there and 2 hours back. And if that seems a little too long, you can rent a horse to take you two-thirds of the way. Giddy up! Also located by the ruins are the “purunmachus,” or stone tombs, that housed the mummified remains of ancient Chachapoyas royalty. You’ll notice a similarity in these structures to the cliff effigies in Indonesia. The Chachapoyas disappeared due to a disease that was left by the Spanish. Visiting the “purunmachus” is an ideal way to pay your respects.

Kuelap Fortress & Cajamarca

You can see the windows carved within the cliff as a pre-Inca necropolis

Kuelap comes as the perfect add on to any Peru tour. In particular, consider combing Cajamarca with your holiday in Peru. This quaint colonial metropolis is just a couple of hours southwest of Kuelap and rests between an easy-going valley and considerably spacious mountains in every direction. Perfect for young travelers, boutique restaurants, bars, elegant hotels, and fine-dining restaurants line the streets of Cajamarca. While Kuelap is a perfect add on to any Peru Tour, Cajamarca might make the trip just that much better. The Best Tours of the Amazon Rainforest https://www.southamerica.travel/news/the-best-tours-of-the-amazon-rainforest https://www.southamerica.travel/news/the-best-tours-of-the-amazon-rainforest#respond Mon, 26 Aug 2019 05:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/?p=15872 Last updated on July 8th, 2021 at 10:14 am

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most spectacular areas of our planet. One of the reasons why it’s so special is because of its diverse collection of wildlife. There is an extraordinary variety of birds in the Amazon, including colorful toucans, hummingbirds, and oddities such as the hoatzin. Unusual insects such as the black butterfly and Brachydiplax dragonfly can be seen flying around in the tree canopy. Exotic plants such as bromeliads and passion fruit flowers add breathtaking beauty and vibrant colors to the landscape. Sloths climb in large trees, caimans patrol the waters, jaguars hunt the river banks and monkeys swing through the forests. Amazon Rainforest tours introduce you to all of this plus comfortable lodgings and interesting cuisines. When you are searching for Amazon vacation packages, consider a customized tour where you can tailor the trip to your interests. You can decide how long you want to stay in an area and your desired level of luxury. You also have the option to combine several days in the rainforest with visits to other important South American destinations, such as Machu Picchu, Lima, or Rio de Janeiro. The ability to customize your trip to the Amazon Rainforest often gives you the best value for your money. Especially due to the fact that you are seeing the places you want to see, in the order and duration that you desire.

The Highlights of the Amazon Area

An emperor Tamarin is spotted in the Amazon Rainforest   Amazon trips are an opportunity for travelers to reconnect with nature. You can relax in your jungle lodge and experience the sounds, smells, and sights of the jungle. Imagine sitting in a cozy bungalow, nestled in dense foliage, and seeing a troop of monkeys swinging right outside your window. Or maybe you will see a flock of parrots feeding on fruit close by or a colorful hummingbird sipping the nectar from a bright red flower. Other possible highlights of your Amazon trip include the following:

  • Seeing exotic wildlife up close and personal
  • Taking walks with local guides who can point out the hidden wonders of the forest
  • Eating traditional dishes from fruits, plants, and fish gathered from the surrounding area
  • Meeting local indigenous peoples and to learn about their way of life
  • Climbing towers within the jungle and experience the forest from above the canopy
  • Embarking on a nighttime safari to hear and see the unique species of the night

Our travel experts can help you create the best Amazon rainforest tour package, which will suit your interests perfectly. While we offer set itineraries, they can always be tailored to fit your interests. We like to refer to these itineraries as simply inspiration. If you desire more time spent learning about the local culture, we will do our best to set that up. If you are looking to learn more about birds or flowers, we will work to arrange that. This tour will be everything that you’ve imagined it to be.

The Top Excursions Beyond the Rainforest

A cable car soars through the air, above the lush trees to get to Sugarloaf Mountain   Many people that travel to the Amazon Rainforest wish to see some of the famous cultural sites of the area, once they have had their fill of the rainforest. Therefore, we are able to combine rainforest tours with other activities. The following are a few of the most popular offerings we have:

A visit to Machu Picchu is often a must-see for visitors who experience the Peruvian Amazon. This ancient citadel of the Incas is located high up on a plateau in the Andes. Its purpose and history are still a mystery to researchers, however, there is sufficient evidence of a successful civilization. However, the list above is only a few of the options that you have available. Remember, you can choose to follow one of our established itineraries or completely customize the entire trip for your interests. An example of an excursion not listed above would be to the famed Iguazu Falls National Park. Which is located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, and is labeled as one of the new Natural Seven Wonders of the World.

The Main Benefits of Custom Travel

Two visitors peer into binoculars as they sit on a canoe on the Amazon River   When you customize a trip to your interests, you get to see the areas that you dream of and engage in the activities that you love. It often is a great way to save money, as you spend just the right amount of time you want at each destination. Additionally, you have the ability to fly in and out of airports that make the most sense for your itinerary, instead of sticking to a rigid plan. Basically, through customization, you spend time and money on the things you love. And don’t have to bother spending time and money in areas you are not interested in. This aspect may not always be true with other tours that don’t offer the same flexibility. By working with our travel consultants, not only will you get to pick the areas you are interested in, but you may get to learn more about South America. All travel consultants at SouthAmerica.travel are either from South America or have lived there for an adequate amount of time. Due to their extensive experience, they can tell you the best restaurants in Buenos Aires, or provide tips to seeing Machu Picchu without large crowds. You will have the opportunity to learn of hidden gems that few travelers know about.      Contact our travel experts to begin planning your perfect South American trip. At SouthAmerica.travel we will guide you through the process of choosing the perfect Amazon rainforest tours available. Only book when you have all of the details to your liking.

6 Expert Travel Tips for Brazil https://www.southamerica.travel/brazil/news/6-expert-travel-tips-for-brazil Fri, 02 Aug 2019 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/6-expert-tips-for-traveling-in-brazil/ Last updated on March 26th, 2021 at 09:51 am

Travel Tips for Going to Brazil

Brazil is rich in culture, history, nature and known for its tropical climate and breathtaking region of the Amazon Rainforest. There is no denying that taking a vacation to Brazil is a memorable experience. Regardless if you’re traveling solo, going with friends, or heading out on a family trip, check out these Brazil travel tips for planning your Brazil vacation to ensure you make the most of it.

Brazil Travel Tip Number #1: Plan Your Travel Documents Well in Advance

A person writing in a planner their thoughts of where they want to travel to within Brazil

Our first travel tip for Brazil is to plan your documents in advance. The first step to touring Brazil is to make sure you have all your travel documents in place. There is nothing worse than canceling the vacation of a lifetime due to a lack of documentation. Depending on where you’re traveling from, Brazil tourist visas may be required. A tourist visa is legal for up to 90 days at a time. So you’ll have plenty of time to explore the country.

Be sure to prepare the visa a few weeks before departure. Luckily, people traveling from Australia, Canada, Japan, or the United States no longer need a tourist visa to enter Brazil. To enter Brazil, travelers’ passports need to be valid for at least 6 months after your travel date.

Be sure to check the expiration date on your passport when you are beginning to plan a trip, and allocate enough time to renew. Also, we highly recommend taking photos and making copies of your passport. These copies will suffice while traveling around Brazil, allowing you to leave the original passport locked away in the hotel safe.

Brazil Travel Tip Number #2: Understand What You’ll Be Spending

Taking a tour of Brazil is an amazing experience but it can be costly. Therefore, it is important to plan your budget well in advance. Many vacationers get the most value for their trip by booking customized travel packages to Brazil. A fully-custom personal itinerary may be costly but the value of your trip will exceed your expectations.

By pre-planning every detail with an expert, you will be able to seamlessly experience everything you want to see during your trip. Therefore, we recommend you consult with an expert Travel Consultant who will focus on your interests. While traveling costs money, it will make you richer in cultural experiences and appreciation of the world. The memories, knowledge, and understanding that visitors gain while traveling are unparalleled.

Brazil Travel Tip Number #3: Stay Safe During Your Trip

Bike-Riders-Near-Copacabana-beach

When traveling to another country, it is important to know the cultural differences and general precautions to ensure your safety. For example, like in any other major city, there are fast drivers in Brazil that may not precisely follow traffic rules. In addition, public transportation or vehicle rentals can be a stressful and sometimes unreliable process. While walking without proper knowledge of the city layout could leave you in an undesirable neighborhood.

One of the biggest perks to guided tours is preplanned transportation and routes. You are guaranteed a safe and timely arrival to all destinations. As with any new country, simply be aware of your surroundings and read up on the cultural norms before you arrive.

Brazil Travel Tip Number #4: Book Plenty of Guided Tours

Don’t make the mistake of thinking the best way to see the country is on your own. Guided Brazil tours are not only safer but more fun. Your guides are experts in the lay of the land, whether you’re visiting the city of Rio or trekking through the Amazon Jungle.

Guided tours allow you to see exactly what you want without all the guesswork. Experts can help you communicate with others, obey cultural “laws” in the cities, and find the hidden gems you’ve been dying to see. Hiring a reputable guide is the only way to ensure you have a truly authentic experience, as well as coincide all of your interests into one amazing Brazil tour package.

Brazil Travel Tip Number #5: Research the Cuisine of the Region

A table with five different Brazilian dishes

Researching will allow you to get a better idea of what type of cuisine is commonly eaten in Brazil. However, beans and rice are the staple ingredients in almost everything that Brazilians eat. For an immersive experience into Brazil’s food scene, consider our Ultimate Brazilian Food & Wine Tour, featuring Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and São Roque!

If you are someone on a special diet, such as gluten allergies, we recommend consulting an expert Travel Consultant. They will be able to advise the best way to accommodate your dietary restrictions during your trip. Also, letting your guide know ahead of time will ensure all meals provided match your diet restrictions. In terms of eating out, some restaurants may cater to special diets, however, it is best to call ahead and ask.

Last but not Least: Create Your Itinerary Well in Advance

If you go to Brazil with the idea of “winging it,” you’ll likely waste time trying to decide where to go and what to do, especially if you’re in a large group that can’t agree. Booking in advance ensures plenty of activity in all the right places. If you are on a short timeline, creating a custom tour is recommended.

With expert advice, you can explore the highlights of the Amazon and the Pantanal Wetlands, the colonial mining towns of Minas Gerias, and experience the big cities with upscale beaches and nightclubs in one tour package. Travel Consultants can also help you determine which areas are family-friendly, which are best for singles, and so on so that nobody feels left out.

Looking for More Travel Tips for Brazil?

Our expert Travel Consultants can help you with everything you need to know about Brazil. Whether you want to hike the mountains or laze about in the waves, learn about small-town life, or head to the big city, custom Brazil packages from a reputable tour guide company is the best way to see the country and enjoy your vacation of a lifetime.

Great Things to Do and See in Patagonia https://www.southamerica.travel/great-things-to-do-and-see-in-patagonia https://www.southamerica.travel/great-things-to-do-and-see-in-patagonia#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2019 07:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/?p=15870 Last updated on June 9th, 2023 at 06:33 am

A picture amongst surrounding flora of a mountain in the Torres del Paine

Shared by Chile and Argentina, the Patagonian region sits at the southern end of South America. It is a land of wild, unforgettable beauty. The longest continental mountain range in the world, the Andes Mountains, stretch into Patagonia, while three different oceans border it: the Pacific Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It also has landscapes of deserts, pampas, and grasslands. When planning a trip to Patagonia, there are so many wonderful sites to see and activities to do.

Known for its excellent hiking options, this wild region is famous for its hikes in Torres Del Paine National Park and the Andes. These locations are great choices to explore, however, there are excellent hikes available throughout the whole region. Besides hiking, Patagonia also contains charming towns, exotic wildlife, and comfortable lodges.

The Top Hiking Choices in Patagonia

When considering what to do in Patagonia, hiking is the first choice of many travelers. This is not only due to the picturesque trails that Patagonia offers when it comes to hiking options, but because these hikes have amazing mountain lakes and massive glaciers. Here are some of the best hikes in Patagonia:

  • The Laguna de Los Tres takes hikers to a deep blue lake in the mountains, located in Los Glaciares National Park. The hike passes by many gorgeous landscapes which include Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre Peak, and Aguja Poincenot.

  • The Laguna Capri Trek is a relatively easy day hike that takes you to a mountain lake overlooking Mount Fitz Roy. For a little bit of effort, you get a wonderful reward with memories that will last a lifetime.

  • The Laguna Torres Trek features distinctive mountains and colorful blue lakes. It is a classic Patagonia hike and can be done in one full day.

  • The four-hour hike to Perito Moreno Glacier rewards hikers with a close-up view of a large glacier. It is one of the best hikes in Patagonia.

Many of the hikes within the Patagonian region can be accomplished in less than a day. However, some hikes are perfect for serious adventure travelers. These hikes can take anywhere from two nights to eight days. Hikes such as the W Trek and the O Circuit are multi-day hikes that take hikers far into the backcountry of this remarkable land. This will allow them to feel immersed in the beauty of the nature around them, perfect for anyone looking to unplug in nature.

The Best National Parks

Couple looking at Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina

On the finest Patagonia tour packages, you have the option to visit several national parks. Torres del Paine National Park is perhaps the best-known park around the world. Famous for its fresh mountain air and remarkable landscape, this park exhibits unforgettable views of serrated peaks, glaciers and stunning lakes. Within the parks, there are guided hikes to the Towers, Torres Massif, Lago Grey, and Grey Glacier. You also have the option to ride amongst the landscapes of this unspoiled land.

Trips to Patagonia often include visiting Los Glaciares National Park, the largest park in Patagonia. Due to the unparalleled beauty in this park, it was labeled as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1981. Activities presented here include floating on a boat to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, which is the world’s third-largest reserve of freshwater. You can even walk on the glacier with crampons, which will give you a panorama view as you stand atop this outstanding feature of nature.

In addition to the wonderful landscape, many know of this area due to its abundance of wildlife. Home to over 500 different species of wildlife, this region is perfect for bird watchers. The mammals that reside in this region are also worth looking for. Examples include the Patagonian Puma, famous for its size and being the southernmost feline of its kind on the continent. They indeed are rare to come across however, in areas such as Torres del Paine National Park and Aysen, visitors increase their chances of seeing this gorgeous feline. Within the Patagonian region, other animals present include huemul deer, Guanaco, rheas, and penguins. This region is perfect for visitors who are interested in seeing animals in their natural habitats.

The Top Lodges in Patagonia

You can choose the accommodations that fit your style of travel, but you will always be treated to comfort and excellent meals. Some of the lodges feature spas and other luxuries while always offering easy access to the area’s natural beauty. The top lodges in Patagonia include the following choices:

To take in all that the region has to offer, a multi-day stay at a pleasant lodge is a great way to make the best use of your time. You can relax, sleep in and still have time to enjoy the many activities in the area.

The Finest Cruises

A cruise with a gorgeous mountainous backdrop

In addition to traditional lodging, Patagonia also offers a variety of cruises. An itinerary that includes a cruise opens up many other areas to see in Patagonia, all from the comfort of a boat. You can see penguins and go whale watching near the top of the Valdes Peninsula.
