What are you looking for in a hotel in South America? Maybe a new and comfortable bed, a welcoming face greeting you at the door, delicious breakfast served by someone that doesn’t burn toast. All those experiences matter when on a South America tour. You just want to relax, forget about your daily routine and feel pampered and you deserve it from time to time!  That’s why it’s so important to an excellent hotel in South America.

Let’s say you visit Peru and decide to stay in a European style, chain hotel. That may suffice, but don’t you think it would be much nicer to step into a hotel that represents the local architecture, where you can feel the atmosphere of the place you are visiting? Where instead of a continental breakfast, they offer cuisine you’ve never tasted before? These are the memories you will hold as a special part of your holiday. Some hotels in South America should be on your bucket list no matter when you plan your trip. That’s why I’m happy to present 5 of the best hotels in South America.

Described as, “a perfect blend of vintage and contemporary, striking a balance between art and beauty to accommodate modernity and technology in unique surroundings.” The hotel’s past can be traced on every corner, as it was once an old convent of Saint Clare of Assisi, built in the 17th century. A famous Colombian artist, Fernando Botero, participated in decorating the place. If you’re planning a Colombia honeymoon or a romantic getaway, why not stay at one of the Best Hotels in South America.

The hotel had numerous owners that probably didn’t imagine that one day. It would be one of the best hotels for anyone visiting Cusco according to TripAdvisor. The building, in the hands of Jesuits, served as a school, a convent, and an orphanage. Until, finally in 2012, it was converted into one of the grandest hotels Peru has ever had. Its importance has grown over the years, leading to its title, “a cultural patrimony,” of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This beachside hotel features a combination of antique design and modern elements. It has an abundance of astonishing amenities, a tennis court, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, international restaurants, and a 3-story spa. The views from the hotel are just breathtaking. Things to do in El Calafate Patagonia https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/news/things-to-do-in-el-calafate https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/news/things-to-do-in-el-calafate#respond Thu, 30 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/things-to-do-in-el-calafate/ Last updated on December 28th, 2020 at 03:47 pm

Patagonia’s remarkable beauty and expansive wilderness attract adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. If you have found yourself drawn to this remote region, chances are you will spend a few days exploring El Calafate. El Calafate is an excellent starting point for any of our Patagonia tours, especially if you’re thinking about a trip to Torres Del Paine, El Chaltén, or Los Glaciares National Park. The town of El Calafate is most famous for its close proximity to Perito Moreno Glacier, which happens to be one of only three advancing glaciers left in the world. Read on for our recommendations on how best to spend your time in El Calafate.

1. Tour the Perito Moreno Glacier

woman standing at viewpoint for Perito Moreno Glacier

A trip to Patagonia would not be complete without a visit to El Calafate to see the world-famous Perito Moreno Glacier.  Perito Moreno is the most impressive glacier in the region with a front stretching 5 km long and 60 meters above the water, this is larger than the city of Buenos Aires and five times the size of Manhattan! Since 1970, Perito Moreno has been what they call a “stable glacier,” meaning that it is neither advancing nor retreating.  On average, it moves roughly 2 meters a day.

Because it is a moving glacier, every 4-5 years it reaches the opposing Magellan Peninsula, forming a dam that prevents the arm of the Brazo Rico from draining into the Brazo Sur to Lago Argentino. When this happens, water continues to seep under the glacier putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the base and eventually forms a little passage (as pictured to the right). As the glacier continues to advance, the passageway ultimately fractures. This spectacular natural phenomenon recently occurred in March of 2016.

Perito Moreno Glacier Itineraries

Patagonia Cruise driving by glacier

There are plenty of different tours to see Perito Moreno Glacier including; a walking tour, a glacier trekking excursion, or even a boat tour that takes you to the face of the glacier. Regardless of what you decide to do, Perito Moreno Glacier is sure to leave you speechless. Most tours depart from El Calafate around 8 AM and last between 8-12 hours.  Typically tour companies pick you up from your hotel in the morning and drop you off in the evening. That means you’ll need at least two nights in El Calafate.

Nautical Safari

I went on the Nautical Safari during my visit to Perito Moreno Glacier. I recommend leaving from Bajo de las Sombras Pier, located about 6 km from the glacier lookout point. This route takes you to the other side of the glacier. The boat ride lasts about 1-hour and provides plenty of opportunities to capture the perfect photo. Each photo gets better and better as you move closer to the glacier.

Mini Trekking

If you are an adventure seeker, it’s hard to beat walking on Perito Moreno Glacier. The mini trekking combines the Nautical Safari experience with glacier trekking. First, you will take a short boat ride towards the glacier. From there, you’ll have a short 30-minute walk to the glacier.

The guides will explain how to walk on the glacier, how to use your crampons, the glacier’s origin, and the flora and fauna of the region. You spend about 2-hours trekking on the glacier, frequently stopping to take photos of the rivers and deep crevasses on the glacier. The spectacular blue colors you see are a mere reflection of the sun, in reality, the glacier is, in fact, white. Make sure to bring sunglasses and wear extra sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense sun rays reflecting off the glacier.

Walk along the catwalks

Typically people combine the Nautical Safari and the Catwalks into one tour.  The Catwalks provide endless photo opportunities to see the front of the glacier.  Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy lunch at the cafeteria, but I recommend eating outside where you can enjoy a good view of the glacier. Sit on one of the benches and look for ice chunks calving from the glacier.

2. Visit the Glaciarium Ice Museum

The Glaciarium is a beautiful museum right outside of town. If you haven’t visited Perito Moreno Glacier, you might not realize, the structure was designed to look like the face of a glacier.  Visit the different exhibits and learn about the environmental impact we have seen on the glaciers. Go into the screening room for a short 10-minute documentary to learn about the glaciers in Patagonia. The museum is open from 9 am–8 pm during the tourist season and 11 am-8 pm during the winter months from May to August. To get to the Ice Museum, you can take a free shuttle from the Provincial Tourism office in town. Buses depart about every hour.

3. Have a drink at the Yeti Ice Bar or Glacio Bar

There are two ice bars in El Calafate, one at the Ice Museum and the other in town. Here you can enjoy a drink in a glass made entirely of ice from Perito Moreno Glacier. The signature cocktail is the “Calafate” – go figure – which is Fernet Branca, amaretto, pineapple juice, and Calafate berry liquor. The bar is -10° C (14° F), so they give you a special coat before entering, but you cannot spend more than 20-minutes in the bar due to the cold temperature. The bar is open from 11 am–8 pm every day and has a maximum capacity of 25 people, so there may be a wait.

Where to Eat in El Calafate

La Tablita restaurant exterior

La Tablita

No visit to El Calafate would be complete without trying the local specialty, the Patagonian lamb.  La Tablita is one of the best restaurants in town and has glowing reviews. I highly recommend ordering the Patagonian Lamb for the table as the main course and sharing a few side dishes. You can get the parrilla, a grilled assortment of meat and chicken, but we recommend the lamb. Ask your hotel to make a reservation in advance.

Ovejitas de la Patagonia

For dessert, stop by any local ice cream shop and try the special El Calafate berry ice cream. Rumor has it, if you eat the Calafate berries you will return to El Calafate one day.

The Best Paraty Tours for Any Traveler https://www.southamerica.travel/brazil/news/paraty-tours https://www.southamerica.travel/brazil/news/paraty-tours#respond Thu, 09 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/paraty-tours/ Last updated on January 15th, 2021 at 10:40 am

Paraty Tours

Paraty tours are a must for travelers visiting Brazil. Paraty is a small charming colonial town that sits alongside a beautiful bay amongst the ‘Green Coast’ between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Characterized by cobblestone streets lined with colored colonial buildings and churches, all with a stunning lush backdrop of green valleys and bath-temperature warm green waters. Paraty is the perfect destination to spend a couple of days relaxing. It is also a great complement to the energy of Rio de Janeiro.

Recommended Paraty Tours

street view of paraty

Schooner Boat Tour

First on our list of Paraty tours is the Schooner Boat Tour. Take a half-day cruise through the bay from Paraty to visit the nearby 65 islands. The waters are emerald green, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The islands are stunningly beautiful with rich, green tropical vegetation and soft sandy beaches. Enjoy picturesque views of Paraty aboard the Schooner boat. Spot the iconic main cathedral standing to the backdrop of rolling green hills.

Jeep Tour

A jeep tour is another fantastic Paraty tour. Take this half-day excursion through the forest and swim in tropical waterfalls. The waterfalls are epic, relaxing, and enchanting. At the end of the tour, visit a traditional “cachaça” distillery. Cachaça is used in the traditional South American drink, caipirinhas. Overall, this is just a beautiful outdoor tour!

Explore the Town by Foot

Next up is a city tour! The best thing to do in Paraty is to stroll around the town on foot and explore the quaint streets and locally-owned shops. The entire town can be easily seen in half a day. However, every time you return, you will see something new! It’s surprising how easy it is to get lost amongst the streets while exploring and café hopping. This makes for a fantastic afternoon to complement a morning tour or half-day at the beach!

Visit the Beaches

Last on our list of recommended Paraty tours, is a beach excursion. The beaches in Brazil are beautiful and make for a relaxing swim or siesta. Praia do Pontal is the beach closest to town. The beach is lined with little restaurants and outdoor tables serving seafood, fresh juices, and ice-cold beers. There are many other beaches within walking distance of the town, which are slightly more secluded and quiet. Praia do Jabaquara was my favorite in the area! Ask your guide or your hotel receptionist what beach they recommend!

Where is Paraty?

Waterfront at Paraty

Do you know where Paraty is? This adorable town is 4-hours south of Rio de Janeiro. Roads quickly connect these destinations. You’ll see picturesque bays, deep green valleys, and small Brazilian townships along the way. The drive passes the Bay of Angra dos Reis, where boats to Ilha Grande depart.  This 4-hour trip can be easily broken up with a stop for a traditional ‘Salgado’ – a savory Brazilian pastry.

In 1667, Paraty was a gold port held by the Portuguese. Until the late 1800s, it was a stopover point for people traveling between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The historical center of Paraty is well preserved for tourists. The town is seemingly stuck in a time warp of Portuguese colonial architecture, and cobblestone streets lined with small stores and restaurants selling delicious foods and souvenirs.

How to get to Paraty

Get to Paraty by Bus:

Paraty is easily accessible by road. The bus departs from Rodoviaria Novo Rio, Rio’s central bus station, and takes around 4.5-hours with only one stop. Look for the Costa Verde bus company; these are modern and comfortable buses that depart every hour. Many buses even offer wifi! The terminal in Paraty is just a short 5-minute walk from the city.

Private Transfer:

We can organize private transfers with an English speaking guide from Rio de Janeiro to Paraty. This is about a 4-hour private transfer, including one-stop. It is by far the quickest and most comfortable way to get to Paraty!

Shared Transfer:

A number of companies offer group transfers from your Rio de Janeiro to Paraty for a reasonable price. Companies such as Paraty Tours or Easy Transfer run departures that leave in the morning and take around the same amount of time as the bus. If you don’t want to be bothered by arranging your tours, we can customize your own transfer and arrange it for you.

Where to Stay in Paraty

Pousada do Sandi exterior at dusk

Pousada do Sandi:

This hotel is in the historic district of Paraty. It combines modern design and comfortable amenities with cultural and historical surroundings. While it is one of the only Posadas located in the historic district, Pousada do Sandi will allow you to immerse yourself in the culture and offers an authentic feel with everything at your doorstep. Request a room with a balcony overlooking the street, where you can relax and open the tall doors. Enjoy the sunlight and let the fresh sea air fill the room.

Best Time to Visit Paraty

Paraty boat and ihla grande

Like Brazil, it is always a good time to visit Paraty. Brazil weather is exceptional year-round. You can expect beautiful blue skies and warm weather, often with a gentle breeze. In the summer, the days are longer and temperatures can reach up to 35 °C (95 °F) whereas, during the winter, temperatures do not drop lower than 15 °C (60 °F).

Let us include Paraty on your next trip to Rio de Janeiro – the perfect finish to an unforgettable South America adventure!

4 Star Ecuador – Patio Andaluz in Colonial Quito https://www.southamerica.travel/ecuador/news/4-star-ecuador-patio-andaluz-colonial-quito https://www.southamerica.travel/ecuador/news/4-star-ecuador-patio-andaluz-colonial-quito#respond Sun, 25 Jan 2015 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/4-star-ecuador-patio-andaluz-colonial-quito/ Last updated on December 23rd, 2020 at 04:35 pm

Patio Andaluz_opt El Hotel Patio Andaluz in San Francisco de Quito gives travelers the chance to go back a few centuries by walking along beautiful, narrow streets to experience the colonial history of the town. This elegant 4-star boutique hotel is situated in the heart of the Old Historic Center of Quito — a place that will not leave you unmoved. Quito is the highest capital city in the world at an elevation of 9,350 feet (2,800 meters) above sea level. Thanks to its elevation, even after the 1917 earthquake, Quito has the best-preserved and least altered historic center in Latin America. This culturally rich district covers more than 800 acres (3.25 km²) and features a variety of churches, convents, museums, monasteries and chapels. Actually, Quito was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city and was one of the first cities designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Quito Map_opt In terms of heritage, as you can see in the picture above, the Patio Andaluz is surrounded by historical monuments such as beautiful old churches, Spanish municipal buildings and other structures that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The must-visit place in Quito is the Plaza de Independencia, which is located near the Andaluz. The style of the entire city is based on aspects of Spanish colonial architecture where most of the structures continue to be lived in and used as stores, offices, restaurants and hotels like the Patio Andaluz. Hot Tours: Quito and the Galapagos Islands, Guayaquil to Quito by Train This amazing place is not only a historical heritage; you can also have the pleasure of admiring it from above, taking in its unique landscapes with views of mountains, volcanoes and the famous hill in the center of town, El Panecillo. It is often said of Quito that its setting alone is enough to strike you speechless. AndaluzRoom_optPatio Andaluz is a true boutique hotel with room for 63 guests across 32 comfortable rooms that are spread over two patios of an old Quito mansion. This provides for a unique luxury experience. In the first patio there are double rooms. Six of these look out on to the main street, while the remaining five all enjoy an inner balcony view up in the eaves of the glass roof, giving onto the patio. Andaluz provides quality dining as well. The hotel restaurant, El Rincón de Cantuña, prepares delicious Spanish fare and traditional Ecuadorian small dishes, which is a great way to discover the country’s local cuisine. For breakfast you will find a generous buffet, for lunchtime there is a set menu and an a-la-carte menu in the evenings. For wine lovers you will find the hotel’s cellar-like Tapas Bar Marqués de Jerez in the lower level of the rear patio, attractively tiled in blue mosaics, where an attentive barman will be waiting for you.

Where to Stay in Valparaiso Chile https://www.southamerica.travel/chile/news/best-places-to-stay-valparaiso-chile https://www.southamerica.travel/chile/news/best-places-to-stay-valparaiso-chile#respond Tue, 30 Dec 2014 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/4-star-chile-gervasoni-valparaiso/ Last updated on November 25th, 2020 at 03:21 am

The Best Places to Stay in Valparaiso Chile

Many of our clients come to visit Valparaiso when visiting Chile and will often ask, where to stay in Valparaiso? It’s an excellent question, as Valparaiso is a major highlight for anyone planning a Chile tour. Amongst all the quirkiness of the city, you can choose from a number of great Valparaiso hotels that we love and have a great location in this great city. When considering where to stay in Valparaiso we highly recommend opting for something from this handy list.

1. Gran Hotel Gervasoni

This boutique 4-star hotel offers travelers the opportunity to explore Valparaiso in an intimate fashion. It features a prime location in the historic district known as Cerro Concepcion — the famous hillside dotted with colorful dwellings that overlook the bay. The neighborhood was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. Many shops and cafes are within walking distance, offering guests a variety of nearby dining nearby options.

Originally constructed by European immigrants in 1870 and recently restored. All 15 suites enjoy a view of the bay, as does the breakfast room where complimentary morning meals offer a picturesque start to the day. An outdoor terrace also provides ideal views of the bay. There is space to barbecue and enjoy the hot tub during nice weather, and the terrace can be covered and climate-controlled for use during winter.

Historic Gervasoni is a great spot for a wine tour, as local and internationally grown wine is very important to the hotel. The Wine Restaurant features a legendary wine cellar in the basement, which includes nearly 200 labels from seven countries. The Restaurante Di Vino (Wine Restaurant) offers a blend of Chilean cuisine and international flavors in a beautiful setting. Terrace seating is available, allowing for an ideal fusion of the best food, drink, and views in town.

2. The Hotel Fauna

The Hotel Fauna is located on Pasaje Dimalow in the center of Cerro Alegre. This 3-star boutique hotel is charming and quirky and is most notable for its terrace restaurant. Residents can enjoy an evening meal with elevated views of some of the nicest parts of the city while watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Basking in the golden hues of the evening light serves to create a magical dining experience.

The rooms are simple but tastefully designed with wooden finishes. I recommend the superior category because for a little extra money you can enjoy views of Valparaiso Bay and the highly aesthetic Cerro Concepcion. The hotel is located only 5-minutes away from the town center and you can also descend to the lower reaches of the city by a funicular (city elevator) which s just 50ft from the entrance to the hotel.

3. Casa Higueras

Located in a refurbished 1920’s manor this 4-star + boutique hotel combines a fusion of warmth and elegance with magnificent views from its elevated location. By all means, a modern hotel the interior’s style maintains the early 20th-century aesthetics of its origins and in that sense gives it a feel which is consistent with the city of Valparaiso as a whole. The spacious rooms are beautifully designed, with rich, warm finishes. I recommend choosing a higher category room with views of the bay.

The hotel is located close to the Fauna and you can also take a funicular to the city center. It is also right next to the Baburizza Palace Museum. The MarAlegre restaurant serves fantastic food and offers guests magnificent views of the bay. There is also an infinity pool, constructed seamlessly into a garden at the front of the hotel, ideal for relaxing and enjoying breathtaking views of the Cerro Concepcion. In a nutshell, this hotel is a gem.

4. Zero Hotel

With its corrugated tin exterior and light airy colors, the Zero hotel has a distinctly maritime feel which is fitting for the city of Valparaiso. The property, originally constructed in the 1880s and converted into a 9-room boutique hotel in 2007. As with the other hotels on this list the Zero Hotel has great views of both city and sea. The rooms are airy and luminous with light blue finishes and high ceilings although I recommend selecting the “portero” category rooms as they are the ones with the best views.

You can enjoy ocean views and have breakfast on one of the several  terraces that are built into the front of the building. There is also a garden which has several levels on the hotel front. Being that there are only 9-rooms. the service is top-notch and we consider this a great high-end boutique option.

About Valparaiso Chile

Conveniently located only 2-hours from Santiago, Valparaiso is a UNESCO World Heritage City that oozes with old-World maritime charm. The hilly cityscape is draped in multicolored houses and dissected by cobblestoned walkways. Vibrant street art gives an air of bohemian cool and it is only fitting that this is the city where the great literary luminary Pablo Neruda decided to see out his Autumn years. In fact, you can visit his home on one of our Valparaiso tours.

5 Star Argentina – Casa Real in Salta, Argentina https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/news/5-star-argentina-casa-real-salta https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/news/5-star-argentina-casa-real-salta#respond Wed, 03 Dec 2014 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/5-star-argentina-casa-real-salta/ Last updated on December 28th, 2020 at 04:08 pm

Salta-Argentina “Salta la Linda” (Salta the Beautiful) is both a city and province in the Northwestern region of Argentina. Located along the Tropic of Capricorn, the town enjoys a subtropical highland climate. This means warm, dry weather and a lot of blue sky. With over half a million inhabitants, Salta enjoys its position as the largest city in this part of the country. The town is placed at the head of the Lerma Valley in the eastern foothills of the Andes mountain range, at an altitude of 1,150 meters (3,780 feet) above sea level. The Hotel Casa Real (Royal House) is centrally located, allowing for easy access to Salta’s art and history museums, colonial architecture, churches and cathedral. There are also several popular restaurants that feature local wines and many varieties of the famous empanada. Salta has the best preserved colonial architecture in the country, making for great walking tours from the hotel. This is also where guests catch the “Train to the Clouds” as well as the cable car to the top of San Bernardo Hill for breathtaking views of the city. Casa Real has 83 rooms (we recommend booking one of the 12 Superior suites) and is located just six blocks from the main square, Plaza 9 de Julio. It’s also a quick 20 minute trip to the airport. The best way to get to know the hotel is from the people itself:

“Perseverance, honesty, professionalism and a positive attitude help achieve goals sometimes thought unimaginable. Anything is possible if you put enough heart and soul in to achieve it! Your welfare and comfort are our priority. We welcome you with a smile. We are here to meet your needs. During your stay discover the quality of our service, enjoy the delicious full breakfast and the fabulous Spa Club. Casa Real – choose us and find your second home.”

In addition to a complimentary breakfast, the hotel also offers free wi-fi internet access. Los Cebiles restaurant and bar is located in the hotel and there is a patio that is perfect for sipping a beer or glass of wine in the evening. The hotel also offers a pool, gym, massage and exercise classes in addition to the Spa Club.

4 Star Peru Hotel Majoro in Nazca https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/4-star-peru-hotel-majoro-nazca https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/4-star-peru-hotel-majoro-nazca#respond Thu, 20 Nov 2014 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/4-star-peru-hotel-majoro-nazca/ Last updated on March 30th, 2021 at 05:44 am

Majoro_opt The Hotel Majoro in Nazca, Peru provides ideal accommodations for those seeking to view the famous Nazca Lines. The property has a fascinating history that goes back over 400 years and includes a conversion from a villa to a convent and back into a hotel. With 62 rooms on 60 beautifully manicured acres, this Hacienda Boutique & Resort is a true oasis for weary travelers. PENZA_Spider_Flickr_gg2cool_optNazca is located just inland from the southern coast of Peru, where the coastal plateau meets the Andean foothills.  Sometime between 400 and 650 AD, ancient cultures created massive geoglyphs throughout the region — some measuring up to 200 meters (660 feet) across. There are hundreds of designs ranging from geometric shapes to plants and animals like the spider featured to the left. The premises was originally founded as the Santiago de la Nasca Villa in the late 16th century. The property would become the Saint Augustus Convent from 1698 to 1910, before being converted into a Casa Hacienda (private residence). Then, in the 1980’s, the property was re-purposed as the Hotel Majoro. A 2005 remodel focused on modernizing the grounds while also seeking to preserve and restore some of the classic, old-world charm. MajoroPool_opt The 60-acre grounds of the Majoro are accentuated by gardens of large, colorful plants and orchards of fruit trees. It’s quite common to see a llama, vicuña or peacock taking a leisurely stroll on a warm afternoon, or even laying by the pool! The comfortable and relaxed atmosphere of the Majoro makes it very easy for all creatures to get along. In addition to the outdoor pool, the resort features a restaurant, art gallery with antiques and a craft shop with a local artisan on site.

NazcaMonkeyBlanket_opt There is a myth that the Nazca Lines can only be seen from the air when, in fact, some of them can be seen by hiking around the hills of the region. However, by air is clearly the way to go if you’re going to make the long trip from your neighborhood to southern Peru. If you’re staying at Hotel Majoro you’re in luck because the resort has its own airline for viewing the Lines, called Air Majoro. There are many other sights and activities to experience in this region too. The adobe pyramids of nearby Cahuachi were an important ceremonial place for ancient Nazca culture. There are more than 40 mounds, some of which overlook the Lines. The region also features a series of aqueducts, called the Puquios. Likely built around the same time that the Lines were created, several of the 36 aqueducts still work, although not all of them have been fully explored or excavated. With so many mysterious attractions in this region, there is a lot of material to keep those interested in ancient civilizations busy. sunboarding_optThere is a planetarium in Nazca that tells the story of the famous lines via a nightly lecture that lasts 45 minutes, accompanied by a domed projection screen and available in up to four languages. Looking for a little adventure and excitement? You might like to try your hand (or feet!) at sun boarding (also called sand surfing) on the second largest sand dune in the world — Duna Grande, just outside Nazca. Second only to Duna Federico Kirbus in nearby Argentina, the “Great Dune” is a popular stop for adventure seekers such as surfers and skiers looking for a fun and challenging alternative. Bees_optAward Winners – Hotel Majoro is the proud recipient of the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for 2013 and 2014. Just like the Nazca region itself, the resort has so much to offer. If you appreciate a good pisco sour, you’ll want to check out the pisco cellar full of delicious drinks that come right from the nearby grape plantation. This hacienda also makes 100% natural honey! Beekeepers Ana and Hugo talk to the bees and tend the hives, ensuring that honey for consumption and natural remedies is produced chemical and preservative-free. Ready to book? A Review of the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/machu-picchu-tours/news/review-inkaterra-machu-picchu-pueblo-hotel https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/machu-picchu-tours/news/review-inkaterra-machu-picchu-pueblo-hotel#respond Fri, 24 May 2013 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/review-inkaterra-machu-picchu-pueblo-hotel/ Last updated on March 29th, 2021 at 09:13 am

a-review-of-the-inkaterra-machu-picchu-pueblo-hotel

When I traveled to Machu Picchu, I went the long route, taking my time from Lima to Cusco, to the Sacred Valley, and finally reaching the little town of Aguas Calientes near Machu Picchu over a span of 5 days. By the time I got off the PeruRail train and set foot in Aguas Calientes, I was tired, to say the least. But my stay at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, the luxury hotel nestled in the cloud forest of Machu Picchu, was simply rejuvenating.

Here is what I found:

Inkaterra is a Peruvian hotel chain with several luxury properties throughout Peru. The Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a 5-star hotel located at the foot of Machu Picchu, in the town of Aguas Calientes. The moment I stepped off the train station and entered the hotel grounds, I encountered a tranquil tropical paradise.

The Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel’s Tropical Surrounding

Bird of paradise, orchids, and other flowers decorate the walking trails that lead from cabaña to cabaña. In the hotel’s main lobby, I received a welcome drink as the staff described the lay of the land, explained what amenities were included, and answered my various questions.

I was then taken to my standard room, which featured a queen-sized bed, extra large shower, and thick dark wood furniture. I found a waffle-cotton robe and slippers in the closet as well. The bedroom was decorated with an elegant minimalist style. The wide windows are allowed to speak for themselves and show off the natural beauty of the Peruvian cloud forest.

Strolling along the walking trails surrounding the hotel grounds, I found a shallow fountain and shaded benches inviting me to stop and relax. Although the rest of the town is just a few minutes’ walks away, the property seems isolated and quiet among the thick tropical vegetation. Some of the superior and deluxe guest rooms are separated from other guest rooms and feature private yards and outdoor Jacuzzi tubs.

The amenities

The center of the hotel property seems to be oriented around the outdoor swimming pool. There are tea and cookies served each afternoon by the pool. There’s also a Jacuzzi surrounded by shady trees, a changing room, and showers. Plus, guests can enjoy a spa treatment or massage at the adjacent spa.

The Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel also offers currency exchange, an internet cafe, a bar, and a restaurant. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the bar serves up great Pisco Sours. I sat down to dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the elegance of the restaurant, with its low lighting, wide windows, and well-mannered waitstaff.

In fact, one of the most wonderful aspects of my stay at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel was the patience, kindness, and helpfulness of the staff. I enjoyed trying to practice my Spanish with a very patient young man who served the tea each afternoon at the pool. And each staff member greeted me with a friendly Buenas Dias during my stay.

The breakfast buffet was open especially early, to accommodate those who wanted to reach Machu Picchu by sunrise. I woke at 4:30 AM to get an early start, and was greeted with a bountiful feast at the breakfast table.

The Machu Picchu Experience

I then took off for a day at Machu Picchu, and only returned to the hotel in the late afternoon in order to pick up my luggage. Thankfully, the hotel staff allowed me to lounge by the pool and use the changing room and Internet cafe while I waited for my train to arrive. The Inkaterra hotel was so accommodating that it made my time at Machu Picchu so enjoyable and care-free.

Because Machu Picchu is located in such an isolated place, deep in the Peruvian cloud forest, it is not easy to reach in just one day. To really explore the Cusco, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu region in full, it’s best to take your time and consider splurging for a luxury Machu Picchu hotel option.
