You can’t ask for more in a South America honeymoon than a trip to Ecuador. From the Amazon to the Andes, and off the coast to the incredible Galapagos Islands, Ecuador’s diverse landscapes offer the perfect combination for newlyweds seeking adventure and relaxation paired with luxury.

Experience Colonial Gems on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

We recommend beginning any honeymoon in Ecuador in the city of Quito. Quito is the epitome of a colonial gem, as it was declared one of the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its historic center is one of the largest and most well preserved in the Americas! Take a romantic stroll and see all of the well-preserved monuments and buildings lit up under the night sky. Also, what better of a place to rest your head than the colonial mansion of Casa Gangotena, located right in the heart of the historic district.   Casa Gangotena in Quito Ecuador

The city and surrounding area of Quito has a lot to offer for those looking to make the most out of their stay. North of the city is the Middle of the World Monument which sits on the exact equatorial line. Visitors love physically straddling the equator with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the south!   Otavalo Market Handicrafts in Ecuador

Handicrafts at the Otavalo Market in Ecuador

Another excellent choice for a romantic day trip in Ecuador is the famous Otavalo Market. Many locals, also called Otavaleños, come together here to sell their handicrafts. This large and colorful outdoor market in South America is a great place to pick up a gift for a loved one. Saturdays usually have the most vendors, so it is often the best day to visit.

Discover Incredible Landscapes on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

From Quito, we recommend boarding the Tren Crucero. The Tren Crucero is a four-day train journey that travels south, taking guests through the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Train Ride on the Tren Crucero Ecuador

View of the Avenue of Volcanoes Aboard the Tren Crucero

There is no better way to enjoy the landscapes of the Ecuadorian Andes than aboard the Tren Crucero. Sit back and relax while the train passes at least 20 different volcanoes and mountains along its journey, through sugarcane, banana, and cocoa bean plantations. This journey lets you discover the heart and soul of Ecuador, by visiting local towns and indigenous markets. You can witness the local culture first hand which is still very well preserved and alive in this region of Ecuador. The train allows couples to experience a combination of adventure and relaxation.

Spot Unique Wildlife on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

The Tren Crucero conveniently ends in the coastal city of Guayaquil. This city is a good starting point for the Galapagos Islands, a must-see destination on any Ecuadorian honeymoon. The Galapagos Islands are most commonly visited by cruise ships that sail to some of the lesser inhabited islands. There are options as well to stay on the islands and take day excursions. However, Galapagos cruises allow you to see more diverse species of wildlife.

Galapagos Wildlife

Sea lions in the Galapagos Islands

For a luxury honeymoon, I recommend staying aboard the Petrel Cruise. The Petrel is a 16-passenger catamaran, which is excellent for those looking for a more intimate experience since group sizes will be smaller. The cabins aboard the Petrel are spacious, and all include a private balcony, great for watching sunsets each evening!

Sundeck of Petrel Galapagos

The cruise itineraries range from 4-8 days. However, for a honeymoon, I recommend a minimum of 5 days to give enough time for both exploration and relaxation.

Extend Your Tour of Ecuador with the Amazon

Depending on the amount of time you have, you could opt to add on a few nights in the Amazon Rainforest. La Selva Lodge is an excellent option for honeymooners; located on a secluded lake within the rainforest. The rooms within the lodge offer all the luxurious amenities you would need in a hotel, but situated in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest.

Join in daily activities like jungle walks, canoe explorations, kayaking, or spend time pampering yourself in the spa while enjoying the sounds of the rainforest.   Whichever of these destinations you decide upon for your honeymoon to Ecuador, you won’t be disappointed. With everything this wonderful country has to offer you and your loved one, it will be a trip you will never forget!

Travel Guide to El Chalten: Argentina’s Gateway to Patagonia

Buried deep in the Patagonian region of Southern Argentina sits the small mountain town of El Chalten. Considered the trekking and adventure capital of Argentina, this town hosts hiking, climbing, and photography enthusiasts alike. El Chalten is home to some of the most rugged and impressive peaks in the region, like Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, El Chalten, Patagonia isis the perfect destination for those seeking adventure in Argentine Patagonia region. Today, in this El Chalten Travel Guide, we will cover all the most important facts about El Chalten, including how to get to El Chalten, the best places to stay, and feature some of our best Patagonia Tours that include stops in El Chalten.

How to Get to El Chalten

El-Chalten-Los Glaciares-PatagoniaImage sourced from https://www.switchbacktravel.com/sites/default/files/images/articles/Los%20Glaciares%20Patagonia.jpg The most common way to reach the town of El Chalten is by bus from El Calafate. Traveling from El Calafate to El Chalten is a breeze, with bus companies operating at various times throughout the day. Most departures occur during the summer months (December – March). View the approximate departure times below: El Calafate -> El Chalten (approx. 4 hours) 7:00am, 8:00am, 1:00pm, 4:30pm, 6:00pm and 6:30pm El Chalten -> El Calafate (approx. 4 hours) 7:30am, 8:00am, 10:30am, 1:00pm, 6:00pm, 6:30pm, and 7:30pm

The Best Places to Stay in El Chalten

For a simple and cozy experience, opt for Hosteria Senderos. Located across the street from the bus station in El Chalten, this is a great option for those looking for a mid-range hotel. El-Chalten-Hosteria-Senderos-Argentina *** Insider Travel Tip: Choose a higher category room at Hosteria Senderos, as the standard is small. For a hotel with more amenities, try the 4-star plus Don Los Cerros. While the location is farther away from the bus station, the rooms are stocked with all the amenities you could want in a mountain hotel. Just take note that additional transfers are required to reach the hotel. El-Chalten-Don-Los-Cerros-PatagoniaImage sourced from https://images.bestday.com. For those seeking a remote and luxurious experience, choose Aguas Arriba Lodge. Due to its location 37 kilometers from El Chalten, visitors have total privacy and magnificent views of the lake, the north face of Mt. Fitz Roy and more. Relax in your room or in the surrounding area of the lodge and you will find solitude in nature. El-Chalten-Aguas-Arriba-LodgeImage sourced from https://s-ec.bstatic.com.

The Best Hikes in El Chalten

First on everyone’s list should be a trek to Laguna de Los Tres. This is the most famous hike in the area and offers the best views of the iconic peak, Mt. Fitz Roy. As a Patagonia Travel Expert, I recommend that my clients travel during Fall (End of March – April). During this time, the weather is the most temperate. And most importantly, travelers can notice how the beech trees burst with bright reds and oranges, providing a stunning contrast to the cool hues of the granite peaks. El-Chalten-Torre-Laguna-de-Los-TresImage sourced from https://blogpatagonia.australis.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/iStock-488721805.jpg The trail is fairly moderate in terms of difficulty. However, the final 400 meters proves to be the biggest challenge. Thighs will be burning as you ascend to the top of a moraine ridge, revealing drop-dead gorgeous views of a turquoise lake nestled in front of the stunning Mt. Fitz Roy herself. Find yourself a solid rock and settle in for one of the best lunch views you might ever encounter. Duration: 9 hours round trip Elevation Gain: 700 meters Difficulty: Moderate Another popular option is the trail to Laguna Torre. Opposite to the Laguna de Los Tres trek, this hike has a much easier terrain. Enjoy the scenic vantage points as the trail takes you to the edge of a beautiful glacial-fed lake situated in front of the towering spires of Cerro Torre. El-Chalten-Laguna-TorreImage sourced from https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/5b/53/91/el-chalten.jpg Duration: 8 hours round trip Elevation Gain: 200 meters Difficulty: Easy-Moderate There you have it, our Guide to El Chalten: The Adventure Gateway to Argentina’s Patagonia.

Luxury Camping in Patagonia – Torres del Paine National Park

Have you ever wanted to camp without the ruggedness of pitching a tent or relying on your fishing skills for dinner? If so, “glamping,” also known as glamorous camping, is for you! The EcoCamp Lodge in Torres del Paine National Park offers the best luxury camping in Patagonia. luxury camping in Patagonia EcoCamp Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia offers many great options when it comes to accommodations. I highly recommend staying at the EcoCamp Lodge for the best luxury camping in Patagonia. Be one with nature and explore one of the worlds most magnificent national parks.  As the first fully sustainable accommodations in the area, EcoCamp is perfect for those seeking both adventure and comfort. At EcoCamp, you can choose from a variety of outdoor programs during the day and relax at the 5-star unique accommodations at night.

Accommodations: Choose your Luxury Camping dome!

EcoCamp’s famous geodesic domes were built in the same shape as the dwellings built by the ancient Kawskar tribes of Patagonia. This is glamping in Patagonia at it’s best, from Standard Domes to Suite Domes; every traveler is sure to find some comfort. luxury camping in patagonia ecocamp Suite Dome: When deciding on a glamorous alternative, choose Suite. Suite Domes offer the most interior space, a private bathroom with a heater, a private terrace, electricity, and a low emission wood burning stove. With the Patagonian decor and stunning views of the famous Towers, you won’t be disappointed.

Superior Dome: There are only 4 Superior Domes in EcoCamp, making them a hot commodity. These domes have electricity, a small heater, private bathroom, and shower. Not to mention, you’ll have a lot more space. Fall asleep gazing up at the stars through your Superior Dome skylight, and dream about tomorrow’s  adventure.

Standard Dome: Hence the name, the Standard Domes are the smallest and the most basic in the camp. Each dome holds up to 2 travelers, making for some cozy corners! In these domes, there are shared bathrooms and showers. There is no heating or electricity, but there are plenty of wool blankets to keep you warm. The Standard Domes are most comfortable in the summer season (December -February) when the temperatures are warmer. If you are a single traveler, the “sharing is caring” atmosphere is a perfect way to meet other solo travelers.

Yoga Dome: My personal favorite, the Yoga Dome takes glamping in Patagonia to a new level!  EcoCamp visitors aren’t able to spend the night in this dome, but the daily Yoga sessions make up for it. Begin your morning, with a quick stretch before embarking on excursions. And after a long day of trekking, unwind with a soothing evening yoga class. The yoga dome’s large panoramic window has a breathtaking view of the valleys and fields of Torres del Paine. Ponder the moon’s atmospheric beauty, while you sit beside a crackling wood fire, and enjoy the most serene yoga experience of your life.

Choose your EcoCamp Program

With programs ranging from 4-9 days, EcoCamp gives you plenty of options on how to explore Torres del Paine National Park.

Treluxury camping in patagonia ecocampkking Programs: Trekking programs are the most popular. You can choose between famous treks like the W or the O circuit. The treks usually combine overnight stays at EcoCamp and some of the nearby Refugio’s. Porters conveniently carry the majority of your belongings, so all you need to worry about is carrying your day pack.  This allows you to enjoy the sights while trekking and removes the hassle of carrying your week long belongings on your back. luxury camping in patagonia ecocamp

Wildlife Safari: Talk about family friendly and easygoing. On the wildlife safari, you have the opportunity to take in the humbling scenery of Torres del Paine National Park. Many families enjoy spotting unique wildlife, such as condors, guanacos, rheas, and the infamous puma. If your heart is set on this program, be on the lookout for the flora and fauna of Torres del Paine. luxury camping in patagonia ecocamp

Multi-Sport Adventure: If you’re looking for a fast-paced, thrilling itinerary, then the multisport adventure is for you. Spend your days kayaking through blue glaciers, hiking to the base of the famous towers and riding along the blue waters of Laguna Azul.

Food & Drinks: Refuel at the Community Domes

luxury camping in patagonia ecocampBreakfast: Head to the Community Domes for a grand breakfast buffet, so that you can start your day energized with a balanced meal. Here, you will find a variety of fruits, cereal, pastries, eggs, meats, juice, and of course, plenty of coffee.

Lunch: After breakfast, load your bag with a sack-lunch (just like all those elementary school days), from EcoCamp’s “pack your lunch” buffet. Choose from a diverse selection of sandwich fixings, trail mix, fruit and chocolates to fuel you throughout the day.

Dinner: Every evening for dinner you have the opportunity to choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Dinners are far from basic, with vegetarian options for all you herbivores. Reminisce on your day amongst your fellow group members over food and wine, and then head to the bar dome for evening cocktails and card games.

When is the best time to visit Torres del Paine?

luxury camping in patagonia ecocampHigh Season: December – February. The majority of travelers coming to Torres del Paine prefer to travel during the summer months. During these months, days are considerably longer and warmer. However, the wind is at its strongest during this time and trails are more crowded. Shoulder Season: The ideal time to travel to EcoCamp is in the shoulder seasons when rates are lower, and there aren’t as many hikers flocking to the trailheads. The shoulder seasons also give you a chance to see the park in a way many others don’t. With Spring (September-November) comes the many wildflowers and Fall (March-April) brings the brilliant reds and oranges of the southern beech trees.

How do I get to EcoCamp Patagonia?

  1. From Santiago fly into Punta Arenas, where EcoCamp services will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to Torres del Paine National Park.
  2. From Argentina, EcoCamp can arrange for transportation from El Calafate before or after your visit.

Packing List for Luxury Camping in Patagonia

  1. GORE-TEX Shell for those infamous Patagonian winds and downpours.
  2. Waterproof Hiking Boots, make sure they’re broken in so you won’t get blisters!
  3. Bring layers! Quick-dry and synthetic clothing.
  4. A good camera! No photos will truly do these landscapes justice, but that doesn’t mean you should settle for your iPhone.

If glamping in Patagonia is something you’d like to do, contact us today and let our experienced travel consultants plan the perfect itinerary for your nature-infused trip to EcoCamp Patagonia. Any of our Patagonia Tours can be combined or customized so that you get the full “glamping” experience. eco-camp-lodge

The Patagonia Eco Camp is a great option for travelers that do not have time to plan a trip to TDP and want to relax and enjoy nature. • San Pedro de Atacama, Chile – By combining Patagonia and San Pedro de Atacama you can see the drastic change in geography from the northern to southern regions of Chile. Food and wine enthusiasts from all over the world flock to South America seeking an authentic culinary experience.

Read travel expert, Jon Hillstead’s South America Guide for Foodies and Winos for restaurant recommendations and country dishes. History shows how the fusion of cultures can influence and improve the flavors of traditional dishes from Chinese influences in Peru to African influences in Brazil. Combine those flavors with the regions of Chile and Argentina which create the perfect environment to produce some of the best wines in the world, making South America the destination for foodies and winos.

South-America-Guide Peru – South America Guide for Foodies and Winos

Lima knew not only as of the capital of Peru but also famous for being the culinary capital of South America. This city on the sea is well known for having world-renowned chefs and restaurants that combine fusions of authentic Peruvian dishes and modern influences.

What to do

Go on a Peru Wine & Gastronomy Tour for a taste of world-class foods and drinks. On this 5-day tour, you will enjoy Peruvian foods, Pisco Sours, Peruvian Wine, and my favorite, ceviche and seafood.

Must Eats

South-America-Guide Ceviche of course! Ceviche is raw seafood cured in citrus juices, such as lemon or lime, and spiced with ají or chili peppers.  This is one of the most popular dishes in Peru. Lomo Saltado, a stir-fry of steak, onion, and tomato served over rice and fried potatoes, is a no brainer and you simply must try it. Guinea pig. For the bold and brave, try cuy (fried guinea pig), an authentic Peruvian staple, which can be found in Cuzco.  This may come as a surprise, but it is actually a delicacy in Peru.

Best Restaurants

Central in Lima has been rated among the top restaurants in Latin America year after year. This Avant-Garde Peruvian-style cuisine is not only pleasing to the taste buds, but to the eyes as well. The 17-course experience will have you on the edge of your seat with anticipation for the next artistic presentation.

Where to Stay

Hotel B is in the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco or Estelar Miraflores in the Miraflores district.

Chile- South America Guide for Foodies and Winos

Chile, most notably famous for its wine production could be the next stop on your food and wine tour. Santiago boasts an up and coming food scene, and the surrounding wine regions offer plenty of variety to some of the best wines in all of South America.

What to do

South-America-Guide Chile is a wine lover’s paradise. There are daily excursions from Santiago to many of the nearby wine regions. For those who prefer whites, head toward the coast to the Casablanca wine valley famous for producing some of the best white Sauvignons and Chardonnays. For reds, take a tour on the Santa Cruz wine route in the Colchagua Valley to find rich Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Syrah. Check out some of the top Chilean Wine Tours.

Must Eats

Pastel de Choclo (corn pie) is the go-to comfort food and traditional Chilean dish. Other must-eats include any seafood dish and, of course, wines which are in abundance and of great quality wherever you are in Chile.

BEST RESTAURANTS

A reservation at Peumayan should be on everyone’s Santiago itinerary. As one of the top restaurants in the city, Peumayan offers traditional Chilean cuisine with a modern twist. Retire in South America

With the cost of living on the rise in places like North America, people are starting to consider retiring abroad. Recently, many countries in South America have become popular destinations to become retired. Whether you are ready for retirement or just day-dreaming about it and looking for now for some nice South America tour, check out our list of the best places to retire in South America. They all attract tourists with their weather, welcoming local people and an excellent standard of living.

1. Uruguay

First, we have Uruguay! Uruguay is one of the best places to retire in South America because of its relaxing, beautiful scenery. Maybe one of the reasons why it’s so on-demand for retirees from the US or Europe is that its culture is very similar to theirs so the assimilation process goes smoothly.

Also, Uruguay is pretty small which is convenient if you are looking for a place to live and some holiday spots close home. Like any country, there are different areas where real estate is more cost-effective; but overall, Uruguay is an affordable place to live. Uruguayans are very friendly and welcoming to foreigners and with the well-established expatriate community, foreigners have a greater sense of comfort. The best places to visit and live in Uruguay are:

Punta del Este

It’s a popular holiday destination for many Uruguayans and if you enjoy beautiful warm waters, this seaside city is the ideal place to retire. Here you can find a variety of restaurants, shops, beaches and even a casino to keep you entertained. During the high season, the city is full of energy and during the low season, the pace slows down, creating a great balance year-round.

Punta del Este has quite a vibrant lifestyle with night clubs, golf courses, surfing clubs etc. Many foreigners invest in modern residential towers with their own security, gyms, swimming pools. Apart from luxury residential buildings, you can still find cheaper properties in the older part of the city or single-family homes in the suburbs. Punta del Este is not only the best place to retire in South America but also, one of the happiest cities in South America.

To avoid crowds of people during the summer season in Uruguay you can find your home in nearby Maldonado which is just 10 min away by car. Besides, property taxes there tend to be lower and you can save some money doing shopping on local farmer’s markets. Before you travel to Uruguay you should check out the best time to visit, as Uruguay does have a winter season.

Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in the 17th century so for sure the most attractive part of the city is a colonial historic center listed as one of the UNESCO heritage sites. This city has around 26 000 people which is a perfect size if you look for the best place to retire in South America that is not too big but at the same time not empty. It tends to be more visited by Argentines since it’s just 1 hour away from Buenos Aires taking a ferry.

Even during wintertime, you can spot many tourists walking around the cobblestone streets of the downtown. If you are looking for colonial architecture and dream about filling your new Spanish style house with some antiques that might be the best place for you! You just have to keep in mind that the lifestyle is very calm here. Good thing is that the cost of living is much lower than in Punta del Este and there are many fresh local products you can get like cheese and great wines!

Montevideo

As every capital, Montevideo has many more options for you to look for the best place to retire in South America. It’s quite a big city with a population of close to 2 million people so it’s very commercial and offers typical things a big city has. Montevideo’s life is calm and active at the same time. You can relax on the beach by the river, there are lots of parks and green squares and many cultural events. There is the famous Solis Theatre in the city, Tango and Candombe culture, fish markets.

The best areas to buy properties would be the old center in one of the renovated buildings or the more modern neighborhood called Pocitos. The cost of living in Montevideo is quite high compared to other areas of South America but the standards of urban living are quite high as well. Public transportation is great and more importantly, no serious safety issues to be concerned about.

2. Colombia

Just a flight away from many cities in the United States is Colombia. Colombia ranks high number on the best places to retire in South America list. This diverse country is steadily growing in popularity and is the new hotspot for those seeking a unique place to live. Colombia is one of the most affordable countries in South America. Many people from the US chose it for their second home that’s why there are already many restaurants, hotels, shops run by North Americans. Currently, the site is visited mainly by travelers seeking an off the beaten path adventure, but Kuelap has recently become more popular. Day 1 kuelap-ruins

From the coastal city of Chiclayo, take a private transfer to the city of Chachapoyas. This 9-hour journey crosses one of the world’s driest deserts, winds through the Andes, and ends in the Utcubamba Canyon. Stay at Gocta Lodge, where rooms offer sweeping views of lush green mountains and the cascading water of the third highest waterfall in the world, Gocta Falls.

Day 2

Now that you have traveled closer to Kuelap, take a few detours before embarking on your journey to the fortress by exploring some of the nearby sites. Take a moderate 3-hour hike to the impressive Gocta Falls. The trail winds through beautiful green jungle home to the yellow-tailed woolly monkey and the mountain sloth. Catch glimpses of the falls as you make your way to the base. When you reach the falls enjoy your lunch, and take a dip!

Day 3

Another must-see destination is the sarcophagi of Karajia. These ornate sarcophagi are thought to be the tombs of members of the Chachapoyas who held social significance. Perched up into the Cliffside, these ancient tombs are more than 750 years old. From Chachapoyas take a transfer to the town of Cruz Pata. From Cruz Pata a short 45-minute walk takes you to the site of Karajia.

Day 4

One last destination before we reach Kuelap. Take a transfer to Yerbabuena (1 hour), and then go on a 2-hour hike to the incredible site of Revash. Another tomb, carved into the Cliffside by the Chachapoyas, Revash resembles a colorful miniature town covered in pictographs dating back to 1200 AD.

Chachapoyas-kuelap-ruins

Day 5

It’s time to see the incredible Kuelap ruins. Transfer from your hotel in Chachapoyas and drive 2 hours to the fortress. Or, for the more adventurous, transfer to the town of Tingo and hike 3 hours up to the largest ancient stone structure in South America. Perched high on a ridge, the towering walls surrounding this fortress will leave you wondering how the Chachapoyas managed to construct this masterpiece entirely by hand. Venture through the ruins to find countless roundhouses, still intact after hundreds of years. Soak in the panoramic views of the Utucumba Valley and Cloud forest before heading back down the mountain. Transfer to your hotel in Chachapoyas, spend the night and then make the journey back to Chiclayo to continue your South American adventure.

24 Hours on Isabela Island in the Galapagos https://www.southamerica.travel/galapagos-islands/news/isabela-island-in-the-galapagos https://www.southamerica.travel/galapagos-islands/news/isabela-island-in-the-galapagos#respond Sat, 01 Aug 2015 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/isabela-island-in-the-galapagos/ Last updated on December 23rd, 2020 at 04:01 pm

How to spend 24 Hours on Isabela Island: A Hidden Gem in the Galapagos

Isabel-Island-in-the-galapagos

Isabela Island is the largest and least populated island in the Galapagos and it very well could be one of the most beautiful destinations in the entire archipelago. If given the chance to visit Isabela Island for the day, here is what I recommend doing.

7:30 – 8:30 AM Transportation to Isabela Island in the Galapagos

From Santa Cruz Island, take a short 45-minute water taxi to Isabela Island.

8:30 – 9:30 AM Go to the hotel on Isabela Island in the Galapagos

Start you’re 24 hour trip to Isabela Island off in Puerto Villamil. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by beautiful turquoise-blue waters, so welcoming that you will be tempted to jump right into the water.  But first, you will want to check into your hotel room at the Iguana Crossing Hotel. This 5-star boutique hotel offers ocean views and easy access to the beach. You will fall in love with the outdoor lounge area complete with an infinity pool that overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

Isabela-island-in-the-galapagos

10:00 AM – 3:00 PM Activities

Bike Ride: After briefly exploring your hotel, rent a bike and head toward El Muro de las Lagrimas, also known as the Wall of Tears. This historical site was built by the hands of prisoners who once belonged to a penal colony on the island. The wall served but one purpose, as punishment. The intense heat of the sun made the labor so painful and unbearable that many of the prisoners died while working. The ride up the road is beautiful.  It follows the coastline and is lined with native flora. Be prepared to work up a sweat as you pedal your way up the road to the top of the hill, but don’t worry your hard work will soon be rewarded!  The view from the top makes all the effort worth your while.  After exploring the wall and the viewpoints, coast back down the hill. Keep an eye out for giant tortoises or iguanas roaming around. If you spot one be sure to take a photo, but don’t get too close because this is one of the few places you can still see these gentle giants in their natural habitat. iguana-isabela-island-in-the-galapagos Playa de Amor: Further down the road stop at Playa de Amor, a small beach covered in tiny colorful pieces of red, purple, and white coral.  After a self-guided bike tour, a guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you back to the port. Embark on a speedboat toward an epic location in the Los Tuneles tour. isabela-island-in-the-galapagos Los Tuneles Tour:  The Los Tuneles tour takes you to a unique location off the coast of the island to some amazing geological rock formations. Los Tuneles are lava rocks that have formed into arches jetting out of crystal clear water. These rocks provide excellent habitat for tons of marine wildlife. Here you can also see an abundance of blue-footed boobies, one of my personal favorites, and many other species of birds. After walking around the tunnels get ready for some snorkeling.  A typical snorkeling experience here consists of seeing an abundance of colorful fish, sea turtles, sharks, and even penguins if you are lucky!  This is by far my favorite tour on Isabela Island because you get to see so many different kinds of wildlife. After a bit of snorkeling, enjoy some lunch and get ready to head back towards the port. Scan the horizon and see if you can catch a glimpse of the manta rays leaping out of the water. Los Tuneles is a classic Isabela Island Tour and a must on any quick or long trip to the Galapagos.

isabela-island-in-the-galapagos

5:00 – 7:00 PM Dinner on Isabela Island

After the tour takes a second to relax and recover at the snack shack near the port.  Pick a hammock, sip a coconut, and sway in the warm sea breeze.  After a bit of R & R, take a walk along the beach back to the hotel.  As dinner approaches, head toward Booby Trap restaurant. With a wide variety of dishes to choose from, be sure to try the ceviche, a must while traveling to Ecuador. Scan the menu for maracuya juice, also known as passion fruit juice. There is nothing better than sipping a cold glass of fresh passion fruit juice on a warm day in the Galapagos. isabela-island-in-the-galapagos

7:00 – 9:00 PM Cocktails on Isabela Island

After dinner head to happy hour at Casa Rosada, a fun little bar on the beach.  Try the local favorite, Coco Loco, a rum cocktail served in a coconut. Lay in one of the hammocks and try your luck on the slackline. Relax and enjoy the most beautiful sunset and watch the magnificent colors of Isabela Island change across the horizon.  As the sun disappears, don’t leave just yet, order another Coco Loco and wait as the stars come alive. The night sky on Isabela Island is something you will never forget. Lay back in your chair and stare up at the night sky, dusted with more stars than you’ve ever seen. Don’t leave until you have seen at least one shooting star and then retire to your room at the hotel. isabela-island-in-the-galapagos

5:45 AM Rise & Shine for Sunrise in the Galapagos

The next morning, wake up before sunrise and head to the beach one last time. Watch as the colors light up the beautiful Isabela Island. After breakfast heads back toward the port and say farewell. As you leave, enjoy the turquoise waters and white sandy beaches.  Watch as they disappear into the distance and remember the gem that is Isabela.
