The history of Buenos Aires is highly prevalent throughout the city – perfect for visitors looking to appreciate Argentina’s past. Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia)

A person walks on the Bolovia Salt Flats, as the sky is beautifully reflected off of the flat's floor   Salar de Uyuni is home to the famous salt flats of southern Bolivia. Additionally, Salar is home to prehistoric lakes and plants, flamingoes, and various wildlife including Andean foxes [culpeos] and chinchillas [vizcachas].  Of course, the salt flats are the main attraction. Visitors should go on guided tours of the flats and stay at the famous Hotel de Sal. Hotel de Sal is entirely made out of salt! Other attractions are encouraged on a guided tour, including visiting the salt factory and the train cemetery. Visitors can also walk around the Incahuasi Island, which is a little island in the middle of the flats, completely covered in cacti. There are a few ways to visit these interesting places. It is easy to either come from visiting La Paz or taking a tour that connects Bolivia with Argentina.

Easter Island (Chile)

A line of Hay Nau Nau Moais on Easter Island   Easter Island, known as Rapa Nui, is a Polynesian island located in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, right off the coast of Chile. It is a must-see destination when touring South America. History enthusiasts have not been able to find the true history of the puzzling stone configuration, making it even more of an interesting spot to discover for yourself. Mystery aside, or maybe because of the mystery, Easter Island is worth checking out.  One of the most popular sites on the island is Moai. These are monolithic human figures, said to have been carved by the Rapa Nui people between the years of 1250-1500. Moved from their original location at Rano Raraku, these structures sit apart from where the majority of them still are located. Consider heading down to the white sandy beaches that border the cliff region and have some fun after observing these magnificent sculptures. The sunny beach location is ideal for tanning, scuba diving, surfing, snorkeling and more. At night, rest in one of the fantastic Easter Island lodges.

However, both ways offer spectacular views and are worth-while.

A feature of the gorgeous architecture of Montevideo   The capital of Uruguay is Montevideo. Why You Should Try a Luxury Tour of Ecuador for Your Honeymoon https://www.southamerica.travel/south-america/honeymoon/news/why-you-should-try-a-luxury-tour-of-ecuador-for-your-honeymoon https://www.southamerica.travel/south-america/honeymoon/news/why-you-should-try-a-luxury-tour-of-ecuador-for-your-honeymoon#respond Fri, 10 May 2019 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/why-you-should-try-a-luxury-tour-of-ecuador-for-your-honeymoon/ Last updated on February 14th, 2021 at 01:45 pm

You can’t ask for more in a South America honeymoon than a trip to Ecuador. From the Amazon to the Andes, and off the coast to the incredible Galapagos Islands, Ecuador’s diverse landscapes offer the perfect combination for newlyweds seeking adventure and relaxation paired with luxury.

Experience Colonial Gems on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

We recommend beginning any honeymoon in Ecuador in the city of Quito. Quito is the epitome of a colonial gem, as it was declared one of the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its historic center is one of the largest and most well preserved in the Americas! Take a romantic stroll and see all of the well-preserved monuments and buildings lit up under the night sky. Also, what better of a place to rest your head than the colonial mansion of Casa Gangotena, located right in the heart of the historic district.   Casa Gangotena in Quito Ecuador

Casa Gangotena in Quito Ecuador

The city and surrounding area of Quito has a lot to offer for those looking to make the most out of their stay. North of the city is the Middle of the World Monument which sits on the exact equatorial line. Visitors love physically straddling the equator with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the south!   Otavalo Market Handicrafts in Ecuador

Handicrafts at the Otavalo Market in Ecuador

Another excellent choice for a romantic day trip in Ecuador is the famous Otavalo Market. Many locals, also called Otavaleños, come together here to sell their handicrafts. This large and colorful outdoor market in South America is a great place to pick up a gift for a loved one. Saturdays usually have the most vendors, so it is often the best day to visit.

Discover Incredible Landscapes on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

From Quito, we recommend boarding the Tren Crucero. The Tren Crucero is a four-day train journey that travels south, taking guests through the Avenue of the Volcanoes.

Train Ride on the Tren Crucero Ecuador

View of the Avenue of Volcanoes Aboard the Tren Crucero

There is no better way to enjoy the landscapes of the Ecuadorian Andes than aboard the Tren Crucero. Sit back and relax while the train passes at least 20 different volcanoes and mountains along its journey, through sugarcane, banana, and cocoa bean plantations. This journey lets you discover the heart and soul of Ecuador, by visiting local towns and indigenous markets. You can witness the local culture first hand which is still very well preserved and alive in this region of Ecuador. The train allows couples to experience a combination of adventure and relaxation.

Spot Unique Wildlife on a Luxury Tour of Ecuador

The Tren Crucero conveniently ends in the coastal city of Guayaquil. This city is a good starting point for the Galapagos Islands, a must-see destination on any Ecuadorian honeymoon. The Galapagos Islands are most commonly visited by cruise ships that sail to some of the lesser inhabited islands. There are options as well to stay on the islands and take day excursions. However, Galapagos cruises allow you to see more diverse species of wildlife.

Galapagos Wildlife

Sea lions in the Galapagos Islands

For a luxury honeymoon, I recommend staying aboard the Petrel Cruise. The Petrel is a 16-passenger catamaran, which is excellent for those looking for a more intimate experience since group sizes will be smaller. The cabins aboard the Petrel are spacious, and all include a private balcony, great for watching sunsets each evening!

Sundeck of Petrel Galapagos

Sundeck on the MC Petrel Galapagos Cruise

The cruise itineraries range from 4-8 days. However, for a honeymoon, I recommend a minimum of 5 days to give enough time for both exploration and relaxation.

Extend Your Tour of Ecuador with the Amazon

Depending on the amount of time you have, you could opt to add on a few nights in the Amazon Rainforest. La Selva Lodge is an excellent option for honeymooners; located on a secluded lake within the rainforest. The rooms within the lodge offer all the luxurious amenities you would need in a hotel, but situated in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest.

Join in daily activities like jungle walks, canoe explorations, kayaking, or spend time pampering yourself in the spa while enjoying the sounds of the rainforest.   Whichever of these destinations you decide upon for your honeymoon to Ecuador, you won’t be disappointed. With everything this wonderful country has to offer you and your loved one, it will be a trip you will never forget!

Galapagos Island Hopping vs. Galapagos Cruises https://www.southamerica.travel/galapagos-islands/news/galapagos-island-hopping-tours-vs-galapagos-cruises https://www.southamerica.travel/galapagos-islands/news/galapagos-island-hopping-tours-vs-galapagos-cruises#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/galapagos-island-hopping-tours-vs-galapagos-cruises/ Last updated on January 19th, 2021 at 08:09 am

Galapagos Island Hopping Tours vs. Galapagos Cruises

Are you ready to cross the Galapagos Islands off your bucket list but not sure how to explore the 21 islands that make up the archipelago? There are two main ways to visit the islands: via a multi-day Galapagos cruise or on Galapagos Island Hopping Tours. Today, let’s explore Galapagos Island Hopping vs. Cruises. During a cruise, you will be sleeping, eating, and relaxing on a ship as you travel around the various islands, spotting blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, and snorkeling your days away off the side of the luxury Galapagos cruise. Island hopping, however, includes staying at a 4-star or 5-star luxury hotel on one of the islands, sleeping in late, and taking small speedboats to reach the different protected sites where you too will spot the ever popular blue-footed boobies & giant tortoises. First, we have to cover…

How to Get to the Galapagos Islands

Whether you are embarking on a Galapagos cruise or a Galapagos Island Hopping Tour, your first stop will likely be Quito or Guayaquil, both major cities on mainland Ecuador. From Quito and Guayaquil, there are direct daily flights to Baltra and San Cristobal.

Step one of your journey to the Galapagos Islands is to decide just what islands you think you want to visit! Lucky for you, we have an article on exactly what the best islands to visit in the Galapagos are!

Galapagos Islands Hopping Tours

Pros of Galapagos Island Hopping Tours:

scenic island on galpagos

Pro #1:

No set schedule. Unlike cruises, many island hopping programs do not have set departure dates. Therefore, you can visit the Galapagos Islands on your own schedule. If your adventures on the mainland of South America are already set in stone, the ideal option for you is an island hopping tour.

Pro #2:

More customizable: Want to see Wolf Volcano, swim with Galapagos penguins, or stay at a luxury property? All island hopping tours can be custom tailored to fit your preferences for islands, hotels, activities, etc.

Pro #3:

Option to stay on several different islands – Each island has unique flora, fauna, and geologic features so it’s best to visit more than one island during your time in the Galapagos. With island hopping, you can spend a few nights on Santa Cruz, Isabela, and San Cristobal before returning to the mainland. There are daily inter-island ferries and charter flights serving the largest islands.

Pro #4:

Affordable –  Island hopping packages are typically more affordable than cruises because only hotels, excursions, and some meals are included. All-inclusive options are also available if you prefer.

Cons of Galapagos Island Hopping Tours:

sail boat on blue waters of the Galapagos

Con #1:

Multi-hour boat rides each day – The Galapagos Islands are expansive and cover more than 17,000 square miles of ocean. Each day, you will need to travel 1-2 hours each way to reach the landing sites to begin exploring the islands.

Con #2:

Typically only one excursion each day – Because you will be spending time in transit to reach the islands, many programs only allow for one excursion each day.

Bottom Line about Galapagos Island Hopping Tours:

Island hopping is a great choice for travelers who have set travel dates, have more time to explore the islands and want to see the Galapagos Islands without breaking the bank.

Galapagos Cruises

Pros of Galapagos Cruises:

cruise guests having dinner

Pro #1:

Maximize your time by traveling while you eat and sleep – Time is of the essence while traveling, and this adage is especially true when there is so much to see and do on the Galapagos. Cruises maximize your time as you sail to different islands while you sleep and eat. Because you travel during your downtime, most cruises allow you to do two separate landings plus a snorkeling excursion each day.

Pro #2:

All-inclusive – Since you are on a boat in the middle of the ocean, odds are you may have trouble finding a restaurant within walking distance. Sure enough, cruises feature all-inclusive meal plans so all of your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are taken care of during your time on the ship. Most cruises can prepare meals according to your specific dietary needs with advance notice.

Pro #3:

Variety of cruise sizes – Ships exploring the Galapagos Islands range from small 10 person yachts to 100 person vessels. Regardless of ship size, the average guest to naturalist guide ratio is 12:1 (the national park allows a maximum of 16 guests to one guide while on the islands). Speak with a travel consultant to find the right fit for you!

Cons of Galapagos Cruises:

Galapagos cruise sailing water

Con #1:

Price – Since cruises are all-inclusive programs and include all meals, transfers, excursions, entrance fees, and fuel surcharges for the ships, they tend to be more expensive than land-based programs.

Con #2:

Set departure dates – All cruises have set departure dates every month so you will need to plan the rest of your trip in South America around cruise dates.

Con #3:

Sleeping on a ship – As noted before, you will be traveling while sleeping to maximize your time on the different islands. If you are a light sleeper or prone to seasickness, an island hopping excursion may be the better fit for you.

Bottom line about Galapagos Cruise Tours:

Cruises are excellent for travelers with limited time to explore the Galapagos and are looking for an all-inclusive program

Both island hopping and a cruise tour through the Galapagos are excellent opportunities for exploring this incredible region. Your personal preference will ultimately decide which method of travel is best for you.

The Ecuador Cloud Forest: A Day Trip For Any Itinerary https://www.southamerica.travel/ecuador/news/ecuadors-cloud-forest https://www.southamerica.travel/ecuador/news/ecuadors-cloud-forest#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/ecuadors-cloud-forest/ Last updated on December 23rd, 2020 at 04:34 pm

Ecuador Cloud Forest

Ecuador is a small country which, in terms of ecosystems, punches well above its weight. There is the singular Galapagos Archipelago in the east, the vast Amazon rainforest in the west, and the Andes Mountains running through the middle of it all. It is easy to fill a two or three-week itinerary with these regions, and remain oblivious to a special place to the north which might be the main drawcard for South America nature lovers. I am talking about the Ecuador Cloud Forest and the small town of Mindo at its heart.

Read below for my experience exploring the beautiful terrain of the Cloud Forest of Ecuador. As you plan your dream Ecuador tour package, tell your Travel Consultant that a stop here is a must.

Ecuador's-Cloud-Forest

Wildlife in the Ecuador Cloud Forest

First, we must discuss how great the wildlife is in the Cloud Forest. Higher in elevation than the Amazon rainforest, the forest plays host to its own menagerie of wildlife dwelling beneath low-lying cloud cover for much of each day. The larger of these include sloths, howler monkeys, jaguars, pumas, coati, tayra, and the spectacled bear. More commonly seen are the many species of butterfly, frogs, orchids, and birds.

Ecuador's-Cloud-Forest

That last one is the reason both amateurs and experts alike make their way to Mindo’s cloud forest. The sheer number of birdlife concentrated in the area, well over 400 species, makes this a world-famous hot spot for eco-tourism. There are trogons, toucans, tanagers, cotingas, and dozens of different hummingbirds. The cloud forest of Ecuador is one of the best places in the world to observe these tiny flitters. Additionally, a number of quality lodges have been built, some very recently, to cater to those interested in exploring in-depth. These lodges introduce the question: is it worth staying longer?

Excursions in the Ecuador Cloud Forest

Did you know that the Ecuador Cloud Forest is a perfect day trip from Quito? From Quito, it is only a 2.5-hour drive, along well-paved and scenic roads. Even better, it doesn’t require boarding another plane, like those visiting the Amazon, are obliged to do.

Experience time outdoors in a gorgeous setting with several active excursions before returning to Quito. Take a cable car across the forested valley, hike to half a dozen waterfalls or inner tube downriver. Guests can also spend downtime with time for some impressive zip-lining in the afternoon. Oh, and there is the thrilling Tarzan Swing! This makes for a fantastic family trip, and you don’t need to be bird aficionados to enjoy the visit.

Ecuador's-Cloud-Forest

Though my girlfriend and I don’t consider ourselves birders, we enjoyed photographing the hummers. We found ourselves staying a night at Sachatamia Lodge, just up the hill from Mindo. There were a number of feeders around the main building. While we ate breakfast, the birds enjoyed their faux nectar right outside. Staying a night here gave us more time to explore. Additionally, our guide Sandra was equipped with binoculars, scope, and with over 20 years of experience, she knew where to look. Check out Day 3 of the Luxury Galapagos & Ecuador Train Tour. This is a fantastic example of adding the Mindo Cloud Forest as an excursion to any tour.

Lodges in the Ecuador Cloud Forest

Hosteria Septimo Paraiso

Ecuador's-Cloud-ForestTo maximize sightings, wake early to witness the orchestral birdsong. There are great lodges to do so. One of these is Hosteria Septimo Paraiso, where stays of 2-3 nights are easily justified. Perhaps even better are those lodges located within a protected reserve, and there are two top-notch choices in this category.

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve is 20 Ecuador's-Cloud-Forestminutes uphill from Mindo. The lodge itself boasts a four-story geodesic dome with a restaurant and viewing platform. Officially certified as an Eco-lodge, the surrounding property of over 2,000 acres allows for truly world-class birding.

The Mashpi Lodge

Ecuador's-Cloud-ForestA more recent development in the region is the stunning Mashpi Lodge. This lodge is a blend of nature and luxury atop a forested plateau removed from Mindo and really anything else. A guide described it to me as like being in Jurassic Park, with jeeps taking you deep into the primary forest, a sky bike ride thru the canopy, and highly experienced guides. I recently booked a 4-day/3-night stay for a family, the ideal amount of time to experience one of the newest and most sophisticated additions to Ecuador’s cloud forest.

Final Day in Ecuador’s Cloud Forest

On our final day, we found ourselves with Sandra at the venerable Birdwatcher’s House. This remote property was built by Vinicio Perez, one of Mindo’s first bird guides. Within the span of fifteen minutes, we spotted maybe two dozen species of hummingbirds and tanagers. There were bird hides for photographers intent on not spooking their subjects. He also let us try the oyster mushrooms he has begun growing, which often appear on the menu for his guests. It was a relaxing place, where the wildlife is never far away, and as we drove back to Quito for more days of touring Ecuador, it felt pleasant knowing there were many reasons to return.

View South America from the Sky

Check out the Top 5 Cable Cars in South America

Cable cars are reaching new heights in the southern hemisphere. Countless cities in South America rest along the mighty Andes Mountains, and no train or bus can navigate the steep hillsides. Therefore, cities have turned to the sky for a transportation solution. Though primarily used for tourism, cable cars are transforming the cityscape and reinventing the modern South American metropolis. There is no better way to see a city than from above. Hop aboard one of the following cable car systems and expect to see some of the best 360-degree views!

1. Medellín, Colombia

Cable Cars: View South America from the Sky

Medellín, the poster child of the 21st-century city in South America, was voted the most innovative city in the world in 2012 and for a good reason. The city’s urban planning and infrastructure reinvented itself and empowered its citizens. Medellín’s Metrocable system opened in 2004, as the first cable car system in the world used as a mass transit option. The cable car system seamlessly connects to the Medellín Metro.

Citizens and guests can easily travel from the center of the city to the outlying areas lining the hills. Its success has spawned new lines. The newest line, Line H, opened in late 2016. Line L takes travelers to Arvi Park, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Since Medellín’s successful venture in aerial mass transit, Rio de Janeiro, La Paz, and Caracas have followed Medellín’s lead to build cable car based transportation networks. 2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On the other end of the spectrum is Rio de Janeiro’s famous tourist cable car that soars high reaching Sugarloaf Mountain. The cable car began running in 1912 and was the first of its kind in South America. Since its opening, it has carried 37 million visitors! Outstanding views of the city are enjoyed on the short, 3-minute ride to the peak of Sugarloaf Mountain. The summit sits 1,299 feet above the city. A visit to Rio de Janeiro would not be complete without a trip aboard the cable car ride to Sugarloaf Mountain. Read more >> Rio de Janeiro Tours & Travel

3. La Paz, Bolivia

Cable Cars: View South America from the Sky La Paz holds the title of the highest administrative capital in the world, and its urban growth has flown up the surrounding mountainsides. The city opened the Mi Teleferico system in 2014 to solve a mass transit and pollution problem plaguing the growing capital. The system’s primary goal was to link La Paz with the El Alto which sits 1,350 feet above the capital. Mi Teleferico’s three lines stretch over 6 miles, and more lines are currently in development. In 2015, Mi Teleferico saw terrific success with an annual ridership of 43 million people. Due to its popularity, the city plans to expand the system to 7 lines and increase the total distance to over 12 miles. With these changes, it will become the longest cable car network in the world. 4. Quito, Ecuador

Cable Cars: View South America from the Sky Quito’s Teleférico climbs the East side of Pichincha Volcano to Cruz Loma which sits 13,487 feet above sea level. Quito’s cable car opened in 2005 as a tourist attraction and transported visitors to the peak on a twenty-minute ride. On a bright day, you may see Cotopaxi, Cayambe, and Antisana Volcanoes looming in the distance. For adventurers acclimated to the high elevation, continue hiking for about three hours to the peak of Rucu Pichincha, about 1,500 feet above Cruz Loma. It has a beautiful view! Santiago’s Teleférico Metropolitano whisks visitors up the slopes of San Cristobal Hill on a 3-mile journey to one of the city’s most prominent parks, Metropolitan Park. Metropolitan Park is the largest park in Chile and covers over 1,730 acres. Throughout the park, you will find walking and bicycle paths, the national zoo, a botanical garden, and numerous public pools.
