Machu Picchu for a Memorable Family Vacation https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/why-machu-picchu-makes-for-a-memorable-family-vacation https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/why-machu-picchu-makes-for-a-memorable-family-vacation#respond Fri, 26 Apr 2019 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/why-machu-picchu-makes-for-a-memorable-family-vacation/ Last updated on March 24th, 2021 at 11:26 am

South America has a lot of great places to visit when it comes to family vacations. However, travelers wonder which destination would be best when combining the interests of a family traveling with two adults, two small children, a teenager, and a grandmother. It might be a hard nut to crack if each individual has a different vision of their perfect holiday. Many clients wonder if Machu Picchu, Peru can offer a memorable vacation for the whole family regardless of age or fitness level. It’s an excellent question for me, as I visited Machu Picchu with my husband and my mother-in-law. From that experience, I can confidently list some reasons why Machu Picchu is not only a perfect family destination but also an incredibly memorable one. Here are 5 reasons why Machu Picchu makes for a memorable family vacation.

1. Machu Picchu is Easily Accessible

Most people assume that to visit Machu Picchu, you must endure heavy trekking, walking hundreds of steps, and climbing mountains. This is not always the case.  A woman in a hat walking through a stone archway Rest assured, anyone can visit the Machu Picchu ruins. You do not have to hike. Instead, you can access the ruins by jumping on a shuttle bus that regularly runs from Aguas Calientes. This bus ride provides a scenic uphill experience, lasting roughly 25 minutes. During the journey, jaws will drop while passing by the landscape of majestic mountains leading to the Inca ruins. The trip conveniently finishes at the front entrance of the Machu Picchu Citadel. From there, travelers need to walk a short distance and climb some stairs. However, you can climb the stairs at your own pace, and local guides will be there to help at every step of the way.

2. You Can Hike to Machu Picchu With Your Children

If you are adventure-seeking parents who worry about your children staying in hotels while you embark on a unique experience, I have good news for you. After visiting the Machu Picchu ruins you can do a short 1.5 – 2 hour Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Montana hike. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Montana are two mountains close to the ruins of Machu Picchu. Many travelers prefer to climb these mountains for their views of Machu Picchu. If your children are over 12 years old, you can enjoy this adventure with them. Of course, proceed with precaution. Both hikes are quite steep and require some preparation. I recommend watching videos from the hikes before you decide to do them, to see if your whole family can enjoy it equally.

3. The Machu Picchu Train is Fun for Children and Parents

Without a doubt, Machu Picchu is one of the main highlights of all Peru tours but let’s not forget about the amazing journey that leads to it – a train to Machu Picchu. You can take the train from Cusco (3-hour ride) or Sacred Valley (1h 30 min ride). This journey takes travelers along a fantastic landscape of lush mountains – possibly reminding children of the magical world of Harry Potter. Enjoy a snack on board and a traditional beverage, such as coca tea or a pisco sour. Older travelers can appreciate a nice trip in a comfortable carriage.  Two trains passing each other in the mountains Pro Tip: Sit on the left side of the train from Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu to see the landscape along the Urubamba river.

4. Machu Picchu Altitude Sickness is Avoidable

Some may think Machu Picchu might not be a good idea for a family vacation due to its high altitude. This concern may be avoided if you prepare well for your trip. To prevent altitude sickness at Machu Picchu, spend two nights in Sacred Valley before going to Machu Picchu. Sacred Valley is at a lower altitude, and will give travelers more time to get used to the altitude before heading to see Machu Picchu and Cusco, which is even at a higher elevation than Machu Picchu!

5. Machu Picchu is Full of Friendly Llamas

Probably the most delightful photos that your children can take in Machu Picchu are those with cute llamas and alpacas – typical Peruvian animals that wander around the ruins. They are very friendly and love selfies. Children will adore playing with them. If time permits, visit llama farms in the Sacred Valley or see a local horse show. alpaca in Machu Picchu For more adventure, try zip lining via ferrata in Sacred Valley. Some other recommendations for family adventure include rafting, horseback riding, and mountain biking.

How to Plan a Family Trip to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu and its surroundings are without a doubt a perfect destination for a memorable family vacation. There are plenty things to do there. Most of the hotels are family friendly and have local operators with significant experience in working with people at any age, doing their best to offer safe and fun tours for younger and older family members. A family photo in front of the Machu Picchu mountain is undoubtedly the best souvenir you can bring home from your memorable family vacation in Peru.

Cordillera Blanca Peru | Hiking & Trekking in the Andes Mountains https://www.southamerica.travel/peru/news/cordillera-blanca-peru-hiking-trekking-in-the-andes-mountains Fri, 01 Mar 2019 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/cordillera-blanca-peru-hiking-trekking-and-tours-in-the-andes-mountains/ Last updated on March 26th, 2021 at 12:12 pm

Discover Cordillera Blanca Peru

If you’re an avid hiker and nature lover, odds are you have your sights on the famous Inca Trail in Peru and the W-trek in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile when thinking about trekking in South America. For a more off the beaten path but equally stunning experience, the Cordillera Blanca range in Peru’s western Andes is a must. The mountains, which sit in the Huascarán National Park, make up the highest tropical range in the world and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With 25 trails in the area, you should start thinking about your trip to Peru now!

How to Get to the Cordillera Blanca Peru

From day hikes to multi-day Peru adventures we have you covered and will help you plan your trip to Peru. Explore all these great hikes and more in South America. You hike, explore, and relax. We’ll cover the logistics and take care of all the details!

Trekking Cordillera Blanca Peru

The main starting point for many of the treks exploring the Cordillera Blanca range is the small city of Huaraz. The city of 127,000 people is about a 6-7 hour drive north of Lima. You can take a comfortable public bus directly from Lima to Huaraz or opt for a private transfer. The latter option is ideal as you’ll be able to combine your time high in the mountains with a stop at the ruins of Caral, the oldest city in the Americas. The journey from Lima to Huaraz via Caral is a one day trip. (We do feature a customizable tour from Huaraz to the Cordillera Blanca).

Huaraz sits at a cool 10,000 feet above the sea, and your adventures in the mountains will surely take you even closer to the heavens. Allowing a few days to acclimate to the elevation is mandatory for anyone looking to do a multi-day trek or even the more strenuous day hikes. There are several excursions that depart from Huaraz that will help you acclimate to the high elevations you will experience during the trek.

We recommend visiting the pre-Incan settlement of Chivan de Huantar and a light hike to Lake Wilcacocha to help your body adjust to the extreme altitudes you will be experiencing later in the week. Like other popular destinations in Peru, the Cordillera Blanca range is no stranger to the rainy season from December to March. You won’t experience nonstop rain during these months but you should expect more rainfall than normal. Looking for the best time to visit? We recommend April/May or September/October when the weather is dry and there are fewer travelers.

Multi-day hikes in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca

Quenua Tree in the Cordillera Blanca

The 12 day/11 night Huayhuash Trek is the mother of all treks in the area. You’ll be hiking for more than 75 miles across the remote Peruvian highlands and will ascend to more than 16,400 ft on this full loop route. Due to the demanding nature of the hike, this is a path less traveled so if you are looking for peace and quiet and have the expertise to tackle this 12-day endeavor, this is the trek for you.

You can also do sections of it, no need to do the full adventure. The 4 day/3 night Santa Cruz trek is the most popular multi-day hike in the area and reaches a maximum altitude of 15,682 feet above sea level. You will see countless snow-covered mountain peaks in the distance including the impressive Taulliraju (19,127ft) and Huascarán Norte (22,199 ft), the highest peak in Peru. Along the route, you will pass traditional farming settlements, beautiful wildflowers, and milky blue glacial lakes such as Chinancocha and Orconcocha.

Day-hikes in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca

Lake Wilcacocha

Located only 6 miles outside of Huaraz, this is an ideal hike for travelers looking for an active day excursion while acclimating to the altitude. After driving for about 10 minutes, you will begin the steep 2-hour trek to reach the viewpoint over Lake Wilcacocha which sits at an altitude of 12,221 ft and offers stunning views of the Cordillera Blanca range in the distance.

Lake 69

Perhaps the most popular day hike in the area because of the lake’s cloudy blue-green waters reflecting the snow-white peaks in the distance, this hike should be saved for later in the week because it is no easy walk in the park. You’ll reach a maximum altitude of 14,764 ft and the last hour or so is particularly steep. It takes about 3 hours to reach the lake and 2 hours on the return.

Llanganuco Lakes

If you’re pressed on time or simply don’t want to hike for four days on the Santa Cruz Route, there are also day hikes to reach the Llanganuco Lakes. You will hike until you reach the lakes which sit 13,120 ft above sea level and from there, you will have panoramic views of Chopicalqui (20,841 ft.), Huandoy (20,976 ft.), and the giant Huascaran (22,199 ft.). Along the way, you’ll also pass typical Andean towns like Yungay and Carhuaz.

Chavin de Huantar

If the adventure seeker in you brought you to Huaraz but your history buff counterpart is dying to see some more ruins, a day trip to the pre-Incan Chavin de Huantar is a must-see during your time in the mountains. The Chavin culture thrived from the 13th to 14th century BCE and stretched from the northern to southern coasts of modern-day Peru. Chavin de Huantar is believed to be a religious center for the entire Chavin culture. Inside the ruins, there is a network of tunnels and platforms leading to the 15-foot monolith of Lanzón, the central object of worship in the Chavin culture. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits about 65 miles away from Huaraz making for a relaxing and fascinating day trip.

The Best Restaurants in Buenos Aires https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/buenos-aires-tours/news/best-restaurants-in-buenos-aires-2018 https://www.southamerica.travel/argentina/buenos-aires-tours/news/best-restaurants-in-buenos-aires-2018#respond Tue, 17 Jul 2018 00:00:00 +0000 http://sat.829prod.com/best-restaurants-in-buenos-aires-2018/ Last updated on March 24th, 2021 at 10:30 am

Restaurants in Buenos Aires Argentina

If you’re looking for the best restaurants in Buenos Aires for your Argentina trip, you’ve found the list of locals’ secrets! Argentina is known for many wonderful things – incredible wine, a vibrant history, stunning landscapes, and a passionate football team. However, now it’s time to talk about Argentina’s food and drink.

While the food in Argentina is delicious, I found it a bit difficult to find diversity cuisine. I admit I am a spoiled Londoner who is used to international cuisine is readily available on my doorstep. For those of you like me, take a look at some of my favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires which offer travelers a variety of food. Here’s a list of some of the top spots for both vegetarians and carnivores on a Buenos Aires tour!

1. El Boliche de Nico’s

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires: El Boliche de Nico’s famos Steak platter

First on my list of the best restaurants in Buenos Aires is El Boliche de Nico’s. For something truly Argentine (meat feast, Malbec drenched, family-run, and unfussy service) try Boliche de Nico’s. My friend’s boyfriend took me here and since then I have been back every month! To assure you of its popularity, there was a queue of over 30 people waiting outside (as no reservations are taken) the first time we went. Don’t let the wait disappoint you, this restaurant is worth the wait.

In fact, a line means that people (and locals) like it! The place is classic, authentic, colorful, and adorned with traditional fileteado (a type of artistic drawing and lettering, with stylized lines and flowered, climbing plants, typically used in Buenos Aires). When you arrive you are immediately treated to handmade empanadas, warm bread, and some homemade dips.

The menu is very traditional and they are famous for their ‘Asados’ (Argentine BBQs). However, there is pasta, salad, and other classic dishes. We recommend the ‘Surtido de Carnes’ which comes with a starter of baked provoleta cheese, a selection of barbecued meats, side salad, and chips. This meal is more than enough for over 3 people. I recommend this place for anyone keen to eat like a local, get off the tourist track, and have a belly full of delicious steak and wine in the ‘City of Fury!’

2. La Cabrera

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires: Wine and steak at La Cabrera

Next on my list is La Cabrera. Staying with the meat theme if you are looking for somewhere a little more upmarket then La Cabrera is perfect. After my backpacking adventures, I went to La Cabrera. This restaurant will give you the traditional ‘Parrilla’ experience in a fine dining environment. Unlike Boliche de Nico’s this place will treat you to a glass of bubbly whilst you wait, which is always a nice start to your evening.

The menu is classic Argentine cuts of meat with a choice of delicious side dishes. Whilst I believe it is frequented by some locals, this is definitely a touristy hot spot due to its great location(s) in the buzzing Palermo neighborhood.

A decent meal here will be much more like prices we are used to in Europe or the USA. A steak here may cost anything from $15 USD and upwards. Plus any sides and a bottle from an extensive wine list I believe you would be looking at more like $40 USD per person. A little secret for those that don’t mind an early dinner, you can get 40% off your bill if you come here between 6:30 – 8 pm!

3. Siamo Nel Forno

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires: delicious pizza at Siamo Nel Forno right out of the oven.

Argentina is a mix of various cultures. It is estimated that up to 25 million Argentines have a little Italian descent (up to 62.5% of the total population). Way back in 1857-1940 many Italians began immigrating to Argentina. If you’re looking for Italian while in Argentina, Siamo Nel Forno is the perfect pizza spot for you!

Their true Napoletana style pizza really stands out. The simple but delicious menu cooked with high-quality ingredients (many imported from Italy) in a wood-fired oven will be a ‘sight for sore eyes’ and indeed ‘a taste for sore taste buds’. I went recently with my Italian friend and it even got a thumbs up from her! She was raised on a diet of fresh pizza, pasta…and Nutella, so they must be doing something right!

4. El Sanjuanino

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires: El Sanjuanino's delicious menu. This image has four options of delicious meal choices.

It would be a crime to Argentina and not indulge in an empanada…or five! These tasty little morsels are pastries filled with all sorts of goodies from ham and cheese, vegetables, sweetcorn, chicken, and of course red meat! You can probably find an empanada shop on every street corner and can cost anything from 50 cents to 1.50 USD each and they are perfect to fill a hole. Each region of Argentina claims to make the best empanadas, but the variety from the North (Salta, Tucuman, etc) are arguably the best!

Many Buenos Aires restaurants offer empanadas. Personally, I love my empanadas sitting outside with a beer. But if you want to head to a traditional Argie restaurant to get your fill then I would recommend El Sanjuanino as the place for you. This small chain has three locations throughout the city with one of them being in Recoleta so you cannot miss a tasty feed here.

The empanada choice is extensive with over 10 different flavors to choose from including some popular varieties from the north! The rest of the menu will also offer you great traditional Argentina fare with milanesas, pasta, and also more classic old school dishes like guiso and locro which come highly recommended!

5. Mercado San Telmo

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires; a lady in a pink shirt pondering where to go!

While the San Telmo Market may not be a restaurant in Buenos Aires, it is a great place to find delicious food. If you are indecisive and struggle to choose what sort of ‘food mood’ you are in, the San Telmo Market (which runs every Sunday) is a great place to start! San Telmo is by far one of my most favorite neighborhoods. It’s run down chic vibe would not look out of place in the hipster neighborhoods of East London. And if you can time your Argentina trip to be here on a Sunday then even better!

Whilst in the past the indoor market was more renowned for its antiques and brick-a brace stalls it is now the gastronomic hub in the city’s oldest and coolest barrio! The market offers a heavy dose of world cuisine. Here you can find everything from a traditional French bakery, Swiss raclette, typical food from Argentina, some of the best Latin coffee from the continent. For those looking for a more Asian flavor, then visit Saigon which offers incredible Vietnamese food!

The San Telmo Market has saved many food-based arguments between me and my partner. Here, everyone can grab whatever food they fancy. You can eat it ‘al fresco’ with a cold beer or a tall glass of red wine. Eat and drink while you lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of the market, soaking up the wonderfully chaotic Argentine atmosphere!

6. Lucciano’s and Rapa Nui

Favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires: different icecream options at Lucciano’s and Rapa Nui

When I arrived in Argentina I certainly felt like the cat that got the (ice) cream! Thanks to their strong Italian heritage ice cream is a very serious restaurant here in Buenos Aires and is a natural part of a Porteño’s life, especially in the summer! Again you will be spoilt with a Heladeria on nearly every block and will be lured in to feast your eyes on some of the delicious flavors they have on offer.

My personal favorite is Dulce De Leche Granizado. However, they also have other interesting choices. Choose from strawberries and cream, rich Chocolate from Bariloche, coconut and white chocolate, fruits of the forest, and the forever popular Banana Split! Buy your ice cream by the pot or by the cone. Or for those of you with a real rumble in your stomach then also by the kilo!

There are s0 many great Healderias (ice cream shops) in Buenos Aires. You really should try as many as you can. Two of my favorites are Rapa Nui and Lucciano’s which are small chains here in the city and you can see several dotted about to satisfy your ice cream dreams!

Find Cheap Flights to South America with these amazing tips and tricks

So, you are looking for cheap flights to South America? Finding cheap flights anywhere, let alone to South America can seem daunting. For many, popular destinations in South America such as Peru, Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia feel like worlds away. For some… they almost are (looking at you Central Asia).  Lucky for us, these popular destinations are more accessible and easy to reach than ever! As the leading custom South America Travel Experts in the world, we want to share some of our favorite insider secrets to find the cheapest flights to South America possible. Perhaps you want to find a cheap flight from Lima to Cusco to explore Machu Picchu or from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro for a quick visit to a world-class beach. Maybe adventure travel is more your style and you want a flight to Patagonia, the Amazon Rainforest, or to Quito for a scenic train ride through Ecuador. No matter the destination in South America, this list has you covered. Here we go!

Always browse for flights in an Incognito / Private Browsing Window

When you are browsing for flights, you must ALWAYS be browsing in an Incognito / Private Browsing Window. This is because search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others track your search history and they will and do increase the cost of flights after they see you search for a flight but not buy. Searching for cheap flights to South America in an Incognito or Private Browsing Window will not allow search engines to see what you are searching and thus, you will not see flights increase in price when you decide to purchase them later. To browse for flights in Incognito mode or in a Private Browsing Window, follow the steps below or click here for step by step instructions.  The way you enable an incognito winow in Google Chrome or Safari is done by holding down Command (or “Control” on a PC), Shift, “N”. For Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, hit Command (or “Control” on a PC), Shift, “P”. If you remember one travel tip today when booking cheap flights to South America, this is the one to remember!

Check Multiple Sites to Discover the Cheap Flights to South America

The first thing to do is to always to go to www.kayak.com and www.skyscanner.net and check out what prices they have listed for airfare for your exact travel dates. Kayak is probably the most comprehensive airfare price scanner on the internet and in combination with SkyScanner.net, right off the bat, you have done a nearly complete scan of the online flight prices and deals to and from your destination. Make a note of these prices or keep the tabs on your computer open if you see a deal you don’t want to miss because these fares can change quickly.

Another good option is Google Flights which will allow you to put in your departure city and just type in “South America” as the destination to see all of your options.

Lastly, there are companies like Scott’s Cheap Flights which will email you about deals from your home airport. While it doesn’t specifically focus on South America, you never know when a good deal might pop up!

Compare Airfare with the Airline Directly

After you have checked out what the cheapest and best airfare, find the flight you liked and head over to that airline’s website directly. Search for your flight of choice and compare that price.  We have discovered that sometimes the airline’s offer unique travel specials and occasionally, even cheaper and better flight options on the exact same flight than these comprehensive airfare scanning websites!

Have Flexible Dates To Fly on the Cheapest Day of the Week

Typically the cheapest days to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Use the “flexible dates” option when searching for flights and see what days bring you the lowest price. You can alter your departure date or return date by up to 3 days on either end. It will scan those days and identify the cheapest combination up to as many days as you selected. cheap-flights-south-america-kayak.com-explain

Set up Airfare Alerts and Always Buy When Airfare is Cheapest

Setting up email alerts is a great way to always be able to buy airfare when it is cheapest. You can do this easily with Kayak.com or Google Flights or Skyscanner and if you are planning your trip months ahead of time, it is a fantastic way to save a ton of money.

Once you find cheap airfare to any South America destination, don’t hesitate. Cheap airfare is often based on a lot of availability on a flight and once the flight gets a bit fuller, the price will rise.
